Weekend visitors to Masterton, who stayed at the Hotel Midland, were Messrs R. Carty (Nelson), G. H. Shepherdson (Napier), W. Rusbridge, C. Blincoe. J. E. Learning. C. A. Noble (Wellington), G. Stevens (Palmerston North). . Mr H. W. Lopdell, who for the past seven years has been headmaster of he Bluff Public School, ha? received confirmation of his appointment to a similar position at Petone Central, and is to take up his new duties on September 3. There was a representative attendance of mourners at the funeral on Saturday afternoon of the late Mr Robert Dawson. The service was conducted by members of the Brethren. Messrs C. D. Bauckham and C. D. Graham. Messrs C. D. Graham, R. S. Graham. A. Carstens, B. Dawson, A. Dawson and Chamberlain acted as pallbearers. With an oration on Louis Pasteur, Mr J. B. Bergin won the Victoria University College Debating Society’s Plunket Medal contest on Saturday night. The judges were Mr Justice O’Regan, the Mayor of Wellington, Mr Hislop, and Dr A. G. Butchers. Mi - N. G. Foley was chairman. There were seven entrants. No women students competed. While resting at his vicarage yesterday afternoon after taking three church services, the Rev Richard Hill Johnson, vicar of Takapuna, died suddenly as the result of a heart attack. Mr Johnson had lately been indisposed and had returned about a week ago after recuperating at Rotorua. He appeared to be in his usual health, and in the morning conducted two services in St Peter's Church, Takapuna, and one at Campbell’s Bay. His brother. the Rev Harry Johnson, Auckland, was assisting him by taking some of the day’s duly, but he had intended to conduct the evening service at Takapuna. The death occurred yesterday in Wellington of Mr Dougall John McGowan. director of the firm of McGowan and Magee, Ltd., Customhouse Quay. Wellington, and one who had been connected with many local bodies during the past quarter of a century. He was a life member of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, and on three occasions was president. For one year he was president of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand. Mr McGowan had been | chairman and was a sitting member of the Wellington Harbour Board: he was first chairman of the Winter Show Association. Wellington and had been pi'esiden't of the Wellington Rotary Club and the Boys’ Institute. He was a director of the Centennial Exhibition Company.
