GOOD PERFORMANCE IN CIRCUMSTANCES. Running under conditions which were stated to be the worst ever experienced at Silverstream, the Masterton Harrier Club team registered a very creditable performance at the provincial championships on Saturday. The going was the softest experienced for many years and these conditions did not favour the local runners. Almost at every stage the competitors were running ankle depth and at times even sank to the calves in the soft paddocks. Cold, swollen ■ creeks added to the bad conditions and made the race an exceptionally strenuous one. However in spite of the heavy going the team did better than was expected. The honour of being the first Wairarapa man to finish went to G. Ready, who ran strongly and handled the going remarkably well and finished in eighth position. This is Ready’s best race, this year. Roy Shaw was next to finish for the team.' He was one of the worst affected by the cold and definitely could not handle the going. Both R. Wyeth and W. M. Sellar, who were next in that order, excelled themselves, as neither of these runners are at home on unfirm courses, and ran one of their best races to date. The two. remaining members, S. L. Hatch and F. R. Gillions, found the going too strenuous. The Kiatere Club are to be congratulated on gaining third place in the teams event under conditions unsuitable to themselves. KIATERE CLUB. THIRD PLACE GAINED. In spite of the fact that most of the runners were more or less affected by car sickness, the two teams entered in the Provincial Championships acquitted themselves extremely well. It was a really good effort to gain third place out of 20 teams.
