BASKETBALL

WAIRARAPA ASSOCIATION SATURDAY'S CONTESTS. UNFAVOURABLE WEATHER CONDITIONS. The Wairarapa Basketball Association competitions were continued in unfavourable conditions on Saturday but despite this the players seemed to enjoy the games. RESULTS AT A GLANCE A GRADE. Stars A 15, lona A 2. Collegians A 10, College A 6. lona A 7, College A 7. Collegians A won by default, from Carterton A. B GRADE. College B 10, Stars C 6. College B 10, Stars B 3. Stars B won by default from Stars C. NOTES ON THE GAMES. Stars A scored another win in the competition against lona. Stars have a fine team and their positional play and understanding in each third department makes their combination outstanding. lona were one short but despite this they did not allow Stars to have it all their own way and their attacks had a fair share of the ball. The Stars defences were responsible for a good effort and played a big part in the team’s success. M. Gadsby. whose style of play is most impressive to watch, is a good attacking player as well as a defensive one. Her team mate A. Burgess supports her well and she plays with her head, making most of all the opportunities available. M. Rutherford in the centre is one of the finest centres in the Wairarapa and is an asset to her team. Her line play L a feature of her game. E. Hammond in the goal has an accurate eye and if she develops her field play more will be a good player. For lona R. Percy in the goal worked like a Trojan. P. Jones and M. Eastwood gave good displays in the centre. The Collegians A-College A game was a good one. Joan Gemmell (Collegians) is ah asset to any team and shews good promise. M. McLaren (Collegians) is playing well in defence and with a little more experience will develop into a first class defence. The College girls all played well and although beaten gave a good display of passing and handling for a wet day. E. McLaren J. Jensen played well in the centre. The best game of the day was between lona A and College A and the issue of the game was in doubt rightup to the end. REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. TO COMPETE AT ROTORUA. The following is the Wairarapa Basketball Association’s A representative team to play in the tournament at Rotorua next month: —Forwards: J. Gemmell, M. Hammond. E. Jones. P. Hanley: centres, C. Moylan, M. Rutherford, E. McLaren, M. Eastwood; defence, L. Renner, M. Gadsby, M. McLaren, A. Burgess. A practice was held in showery weather on Saturday afternoon, but with a slippery ball little could be seen of the usual high standard of play. )
