Considering the very bad condition of the ground the Hastwells and Carterton teams played a very fast and at times a brilliant game at Lansdowne on Saturday. From the bully off*' Hastwells set a hot pace and soon had Carterton in trouble, Brian Dick having a shot which just missed. Hastwells continued to attack and after five minutes play Foster opened the score. From the bully, Carterton took play to the Hastwells circle and with a good shot A. Fisher equalised the score. A spell of very even and fast play followed; then Carterton had the advantage but good hockey by the Hastwells backs got them out of difficulties. They took play to the Carterton circle where an infringement by Carterton gave Hastwells a penalty corner from which J. Dick scored, putting his side ahead. Being a goal down Carterton set up a very determined attack and Hastwells were called on to defend. M. Sigvertsen and the goal keeper being brilliant on defence, saving their side on several occasions. Carterton continued to press and were eventually successful in penetrating the defence, Jackson finding the net. Carterton kept up the attack and very narrowly missed scoring. Bob Dick and Jack Dick helping very considerably in the defence. The spell ended with the score equal. On resuming Carterton still had Hastwells' defence severely tested, C. Larsen and IVI. Ngatuere both making good saves. Up and down the field Ihc play went for a period and Carterton made another attack, Jackson finding the net, but he was penalised for off side play. Hastwells then had a turn at attacking. G. Ruakere having a shot which missed. Continuing the pressure H. Worthington scored with a good shot. Hastwells 3, Carterton 2. Determined play by Carterton again had Hastwells defending hard and they were compelled to concede a penalty corner, no advantage being gained from it. With two minutes to go Carterton’s determination was rewarded, Jackson goaling and making the score equal. Time was called without any alteration to the score. Messrs Moynahan and Clements were the umpires.
