“Expect a slump after the war and be prepared for it, and you won’t get one; expect prosperity after you've won the war, and that’s the time you’ll get a slump,” said Mr I. L. M. Coop at a meeting of the executive of the North Canterbury Farmers’ Union. Speaking on immediate conditions, Mr Coop said: “Our defence is better than we think. There are any amount of rifles and plenty of ammunition. Maybe we could do with a few more tanks and some aeroplanes, but from first-hand information I believe that we are better defended than a lot of people think.”
