WITH A POLO NECKLINE. Materials required: 12oz “Sun-Gio’ shrinkproof 4-ply fingering wool, shade No 2116 (marone); 2 pairs needles. Nos 9 and 12. Measuresments: Lengths from top ol shoulder, 24 inches; chest, 38 inches; length of sleeve seam, 20 inches. Abbreviations: k. knit; p. purl; ,st stitch; tog. together. Tension: 6 stitches to 1 inch, 8 rows to 1 inch. Back: Using No 12 needles, cast on 116 stitches. Work in rib of k 2, p 2, for 4 inches (working Ist row into back of sts). Change to No 9 needles and work in st.st. for 11 inches. Shape armholes by casting off 5 sts at the beginning of Ithe next 2 rows. K 2 tog each end of every 2nd row 6 times. When armholes measure 8 inches, shape shoulders by casting off 6 sts at the beginning of the next 10 rows. Cast off. Front: Using No 12 needles, cast on 120 sts. Work in rib of k 2, p 2, for 4 inches (working Ist row into back of sts). Change to No 9 needles and work in st.st. for 11 inches. When armhole measures 8 inches, shape shoulder by casting off 6 sts at armhole edge every 2nd row 5 times. Join wool and work ether side to correspond. Sleeves: Using No 12 needles, cast on 60 sts. Work in rib of k 2, p 2, for 4 inches (working Ist row into back of sts). Change to No 9 needles and workin st.st. increasing 1 st each end of every Bth row until increased to 90 sts. When work measures 20 inches, k 2 tog each end of every row until decreased to 30 sts. Cast off. Neck: Join shoulder seams. Using No 12 needles (pointed both ends), with right side of work towards you, pick up 6sts on each side of “V" at centre front, using 1 needle for each side. Work backwards and forwards on these 2 needles in rib of k 2. p 2, picking up 2 extra sts at the end of each row 4 times. Pick up 4 sts at the end of each row 5 times. Pick up the remaining along each side and with another needle pick up the sts across back of neck. Continue in rib of k 2, p 2, working in rounds for 61 inches. Cast off. To Make Up: Press with a warm iron and damp cloth. Sew up seams, sew in sleeves, placing seam to seam.
