RAIL=CAR SERVICES
DEMAND FOR EXTENSIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Keen demands for additional rail-car services and for more cars in existing services, were made by a number of members of Parliament when the Railways Estimates were under consideration in the House of Representatives yesterday. The Leader oßthe Opposition. Mr Hamilton, asked what the prospects were of more rail-cars being employed in the South Island, and whether the cars had proved just as satisfactory as had been anticipated. The Minister of Railways, Mi’ Sullivan, said the cars had been quite satisfactory. As a good South Islander he would be all for getting more for that island. The department, however, had to use the cars where they rendered the greatest service. They were in use on the line to the West Coast. Mr Jull (Opposition, Waipawa) sought greater rail-car facilities > for Hawke’s Bay. He thought the rail-car was going to be the salvation of the passenger traffic question on the railways. Mr Sullivan said the department had ten more rail-cars on order, but had not allocated them yet. “I know I am asking for trouble in announcing that to the House,” he added. Mr Carr (Government, Timaru): “The South Island is still there.” Mr Roy (Opposition, Clutha) immediately took the opportunity of putting in his order for rail-cars for his electorate.
