SHOW YEAR
MASTERTON ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REPORT. VARIOUS ACTIVITIES REVIEWED. The fifty-third annual report of the Masterton A. and P. Association, for the year ended June 30. 1940. states: "Annual Show. —This was held on February 13 and 14. 1940. and due to war conditions and the restrictions on benzine and an unfavourable season, a loss of £94 5s 6d was made, compared with a profit of £77 5s lOd the previous year. Ram Fair. —This shows a profit of £127 Is 9d. compared with £136 Is Id. Farm Account. —This shows a profit of £ll2 6s 6d, compared with £8 0s 4d. Last year the sheep on hand were written down by 10s a head, and this accounts for a portion of the difference, and wool sold realised a good deal more than last year. "Membership.—Subscriptions collected amounted to £B3O 18s. compared with £846 10s. The membership stands at 1007, compared with 1033. During the year, 39 new members were elected. 19 were lost by death, 32 by resignation, mostly from those leaving the district, and 14 were struck off the roll. Many of these have left the district, and cannot be traced. Golt Links. —The receipts were £62 18s. compared with £73. Weight Judging —Receipts were £37 7s 3d, compared with £46. We are grateful to those members of the Savage Club for their very good work in this competition Working Bee. —A working bee placed doors and made partitions in the horse stalls, and also, made a loading bank near the cattle pens. These were verj much appreciated by exhibitors. Maintenance. —The cost £lO3 10s 4d. compared with £79 16s 6d. More painting has been done, and all buildings are in good order. Night Show: This was held on the first night of the show, anc through the cold weather experienced, the receipts were £B3 8s 4d, compared with £l2l 9s 6d. the profit being included in the show account. The committee recommends a change of programme for the next Night Show. Luncheons. —The less here is £76 0: 3d, compared .with £B7 9s lOd. Ball. —This shows a profit of £lO9 Is Bd, compared with £BB 16s 3d. This was very largely attended, and we desire to thank all those who assisted, and especially the ladies’ committee, whe had charge of the supper arrangements. Mortgage. —This stands at £ 1250, the same as last year. Balance Sheet. —After writing off £lB5 7s 2d as depreciation, there is a deficiency for the year of £75 Ils lid, compared with a surplus of £B2 17s lid. The accumulated funds now stand at £6792 7s 7d. Coloured Lights.—Wc again desire to thank the mayor and councillors for their kindness in allowing these to remain up in the main streets during the Show. Notice of Motion. —Mr W. F. McLaren has given notice of his intention to move at the annual meeting that Miss J. Guild be elected an hon life member in recognition of the services rendered to the association by the late Mr David Guild. “Obituary.—The committee records with deep regret the deaths of the following members: —Mrs A. Bourke, Mrs C. M. Perry. Messrs Simon Campbell, F. J. Hunn. F. W. Joblin, B. Lumley, D. Mcßae. Jas. McGovern, D. A. Pickering, W. Stoddart, A. Turner, R. J. Young, and C. Skill. The following life members also passed away during the year:—Messrs D. Guild, O. H. Beetham, H. H. S. Ryder, D. H. Speedy, H. O. Toogood and A. H. Warren. Mr D. A. Pickering was a member of the committee at the time of his death. He had been a valued member of the committee for several years, and was a particularly useful member on the ground committee. Mr David Guild attended the meeting when the association was first formed, and for very many years was a member of the committee, and for over 50 years retained his interest in its doings. He was a past president and patron of the Association. He had a wonderful fund of information on the work of the association and shows in the early days, and he retained his keen interest in the association until the last. Under his will the association is to receive £5OO. This sum is not yet to hand. In each case suitable reference has been made in the records of the association, and a letter of sympathy forwarded to their relatives. "Thanks. —Thanks are due to the Press for their liberal publicity at all times, to the police and traffic inspectors for their able control of the motor traffic at the show, to the Railways Department, Plunket Society, Stock Receiving Committee, to all stewards, including the lady stewards, to judges to ambulance workers both men and women and to all those who in any way assisted at the show or during the year. Retirements from Committee. — The following are not seeking re-elec-tion: —H. Bennett P. F. Fagan, L. Connelly. Mr T. A. Brown is retiring from the position of vice-president. We desire to thank them for their valuable help and interest in the association. We would make a special appeal to members to retain their membership in these very trying times through which we are passing. Membership is the main source of revenue, and it is essential that shows should be kept going to keep up the quality of our produce sent overseas. We must not slip back on our breeding of the very best stock for future efforts in. connection with increased production." The report is presented for the committee by Mr R. E.
