ROTARY CLUB

ADDRESS BY MR W. L. BUTLER. The weekly luncheon of the Masterten Rotary Club was held in the Y.M.C.A. rooms today. The president. Mr J. J. Hunter presided over a good attendance of members. The speaker of the day was Mr W. L. Eutler, of the P. and T. Department. Mastertcn. who gave an interesting address on the laying of the first Atlantic Cable. "Up to the 19th century little or no improvement had been made in the realm of motion,” stated Mr Butler. “We cannot comprehend the wonder and amazement of the generation which first witnessed the miracle of electricity. Mr Butler outlined the development of the cable communication between Paris, Amsterdam, Moscow. Naples and Lisbon in 1837. The first attempt to lay a cable from Newfoundland was made by Cyrus W. Field with a capita] of 1,750.000 dollars. The British Government and America both offered ships. The cable was lost, however. After two more attempts the cable was successfully laid, in 1860. The speaker indicated the many technical difficulties to be overcome in the laying of the cable, concluding by stating that the miracle of yesterday is today’s commonplace. On the motion of Mr C. R. Mabson a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. A letter was received from the Minister in charge of the Church of England hut at Trenthain. thanking the club for its gift of firewood.
