WEDDINGS
HILL—BUTLER. The wedding took place at St Augustine’s Church, Napier, of Phyllis Joyce, only daughter of Mr and Mrs G. Butler, of Kent Street, Carterton, and Ronald Leighton, only son of Mr E. H. Hill, St Aubyn’s Street, Hastings. The Rev S. R. Gardiner officiated. The bride was escorted by her uncle, Mr C. C. Sorrell, in the unavoidable absence of her father through illness. She wore an exquisite gown of magnolia satin, cut on classical lines with a high neckline and sleeves full fitting from the elbow, with the bustle back falling into a long train. She wore a handsome worked tulle veil with a coronet of pearls, and carried a shower bouquet of carnations and freesias. The bride was attended by two cousins as bridesmaids, Miss Joan Marsh (chief) and Miss Betty Plank, who were dressed alike in picturesque frocks of turquoise blue and clover taffetas respectively, cut on classical lines with shirred bodices and high waistlines with short puffed sleeves and gracefully flared skirts. They wore coronets of tulle and self-toned flowers to match and carried bouquets of carnations and camellias in shades of pink. They wore gold beaded necklaces, gifts from the bridegroom. Two little flower girls attended the bride, Rosemary Sorrell, cousin of the bride, and Jocelyn Robertson, niece of the bridegroom. They wore anklelength frocks of pink figured organdie and carried posies of daphne and primrose and wore pompadour hats with tulle and pink rosebuds and miniature necklaces, gifts from the bridegroom. The best man was Mr Dudley Plank, and the groomsman Mr T. Hunter. After the ceremony a reception was held in the Trocadero Tea Rooms, (where the usual toasts were honoured. The bride’s mother, Mrs G. Butler, assisted by Mrs H. Robertson, the bridegroom’s sister, received their guests, Mrs Butler wearing a navy figured sheer frock with matching hat and carried a bouquet of anemones and primroses in fuchsia tones. Mrs Robertson wore a smart petrel frock under a coat to match, with a navy hat and shoes and carried a bouquet in scarlet tonings. The bride travelled in a smart costume of cedar brown with accessories to tone. Mr and Mrs Hill will make then' future home in Napier.
SEXTON—COOK. At All Saints’ Church, Palmerston North, a very pretty wedding was solemnised when Jean Naomi, second daughter of Mrs T. McAlwee and the late Mr W. Cook, of Palmerston North, and formerly of Greytown, was married to John Dillon, only son of Mr and Mrs W. Sexton, of Glen Oroua. The officiating clergyman was Canon Woodward. The bride was escorted by her step- ’ father, Mr T. McAlwee, and made a 'charming picture in a graceful frock of ivory slipper satin cut on classical lines. The bodice which was slightly shirred at the waist, was finished with a roll collar at the high neck-line. The skirt was moulded to the knees and finished in a long train at the back. A silver girdle was tied at the waist and fell to the hemline. A coronet of white i roses held in place her beautifully embroidered veil, which formed a second I train and was worn over the face on her entering the church. A sheaf of white freesias, winter roses and camelias completed her dainty toilette, together with a triple string of pearls. The three bridesmaids, Misses Betty
Cook (chief), Rene Cook and Vera Cox, were frocked alike in gowns of ivory taffeta. ' The bodices were on Empire lines and pleated in a sunray effect. Pleated sleeves finished the tops. Their graceful skirts swept the ground, cerise velvet sashes falling from the waist to the hemline. Cerise roses worn on Juliet caps of net and bouquets of cerise cyclamen roses and camellias proved to be a colourful effect. Gold crosses on chains, gifts of the bridegroom, completed their attire. The duties of best man were carried out by Mr Sherman Yager, of Bakersfield, California; also assisting the| bridegroom as groomsmen were Mr Sidney Cook (brother of the bride), and Mr Sidney Dudson. On leaving the church the bride was presented with a lucky horseshoe by Miss Joanie Hoare.
At the reception, Mrs McAlwee, in navy costume, hat and skunk stole, assisted by the bridegroom’s mother in brown frock, hat, and fur coat, received the numerous guests. Each carried bouquets of spring flowers. The duties of toast-master was carried out by Mr Vernon Simpson, of Shannon. Afterwards numerous guests were entertained at the home of Mr and Mrs McAlwee, in Broadway Avenue. When the bride appeared for travelling she was attired in a black wool georgette frock finished with Honiton lace collar and cuffs, over which she wore a dark green camelhair coat. A black hat, shoes, gloves, and purse finished the ensemble. Mr and Mrs Sexton received many beautiful presents, including a number of cheques. Among the guests were Mesdames A. Desmond and H. Workman and Miss I. Cook, of Carterton, relatives of the bride.
On the eve of their wedding a party was held for the bride and groom at the home of Mr and Mrs Rube Scott, in Argyle Avenue, when they were presented with a chiming clock from Mr Sexton’s fellow employees. Mrs Sexton was also a guest at two parties, one given by her fellow employees, at which she was presented with a dinner waggon, and the other given by Mrs W. Tyack, being a gift afternoon tea at Rosco’s. The bride received many useful things for her future home, which will*be in Palmerston North.
