ITALIAN CLAIMS
"AUSTRALIAN DESTROYER SUNK.” (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 9.35 a.m.) ROME. July 24. A communique- states: "Italian submarines sunk an Australian destroyer and a British submarine in the Eastern Mediterranean. “An Italian air formation bombed oil depots and the naval base at Malta, despite violent reaction of British antiaircraft batteries. Large fires occurred. "Two British Gloucester fighter planes were shot down in aerial combat in North Africa." Another Italian communique states that prisoners of war include a commander and a first lieutenant.
