IRON AND STEEL INDUSTRY. CANNOT BE GONE ON WITH DURING WAR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. "For certain- reasons, the industry cannot be gone on with because of the war. The officers are now working for the Industries and Commerce Department and the consequence is that this amount will not be expended at all." said the Prime Minister. Mr Fraser, in reply to .questions in the House of Representatives yesterday on estimates .for the Iron and Steel Industry Account. "What are they doing?" asked Mr Forbes (Opposition, Hurunui). referring to the estimate providing for £lO.OOO. “We know that nothing is being done in the account. The provision voted last year was £225,000 and there is a credit in aid of £3OBO. though the industry has not been started. The Prime Minister: The mysteries of finance are unlimited. The explanation that the officers were now working for another department was made when Mr Forbes asked why salaries of £4357 were to be paid.
