BOLD ATTACK

ON MORE POWERFUL ENEMY PLANES MADE BY BRITISH PILOT. MESSERSCHMITT SHOT DOWN. (British Offiicial Wireless.) (Received This Day. 9.50 a.m.) RUGBY, July 19. An Anson reconnaissance aircraft of the Coastal Command yesterday shot down a Messerschmitt 110, which, with three others, was machine-gunning British trawlers off the south-east coast. Although his aircraft was only slightly armed and was 100 miles an hour slower than the German fighters, the Anson pilot immediately attacked while the wireless operator summoned help. In the meantime the trawlers were putting up a stiff barrage of antiaircraft fire against the other Messerschmitts. Spitfires appeared and attacked the remaining German, just as the Anson scored its victory.
