ENEMY RAIDER
OPERATING IN ATLANTIC TWO BRITISH SHIPS SUNK. SURVIVORS REACH WEST INDIES. The Admiralty states, Daventry reports, that an enemy raider is operating in the Atlantic. It is believed to be a converted merchant vessel. Two British ships have been sunk, one of 6000 tons and one of 5600 tons. Some of the survivors have reached the French island of St Bartholomew, in the Leeward group. BRITISH SAILORS ARRIVAL AT MARTINIQUE. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) FORT DE FRANCE (Martinque), July 19. A number of British sailors from two merchant vessels, sunk of July 13. arrived at St Barthelemy, and were received by the French. They may be sent to St Kitts.AMERICAN CONCERN INVESTIGATIONS IN PROGRESS. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) WASHINGTON, July 19. The Navy and the State Departments are officially stated to be investigating details of the sinking of two British merchant vessel near the West Indies, apparently within the interAmerican safety zone. This is regarded seriously, particularly as it is believed that it occurred near Cuba, which will be the scene of the PanAmerican conference on Sunday, in which hemisphere defence is likely to be the most important topic.
