PRESS CONTROL
CONCESSION BY FEDERAL GOVERNMENT UNDER STORM OF CRITICISM. DECISION TO REDRAFT REGULATIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 9.15 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Following upon a welter of criticism the Federal Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) tonight announced that the Director-General of Information, Sir Keith Murdoch, had redrafted the regulations for control of the Press, the radio and the film industry, and that they would be considered by Cabinet tomorrow. Mr Menzies disclaimed any intention by the Government to exercise dictatorial powers over the Press and declared that its sole aim was to insist that any newspaper making misstatements concerning either the war situation or the Government policy should make space available for correcting them as required. The Government had no desire to curb the frankest criticism, but insisted that the truth muse always be told to the public.
