GUN DOGS

f TRIALS AT MASTERTON SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. SOME SPLENDID PERFORMANCES. The first gun dog trials of the 1940-41 season held by the Wairarapa Gun Dog Club took place at Te Whiti at the weekend, when there was’ a good entry of local dogs. The new trial grounds, which were on Mrs Wardell’s property, proved ideal for the purpose and further trials will take place there in the near future. The Open Land section resulted in Mr M. A. Rawlins's Labrador, Cleopatra May, scoring a myrow win over Mr W. O. Wilton's Irish Setter Daisy. The Open Water section, which was one of the hardest trials ever contested by local dogs, resulted in Mr W. O. Wilton's Irish Setter Daisy securing a well-merited win. The Ruamahanga River was a sweeping sheet of flood water, and the dogs all found difficulty in picking up their bearings after being washed down nearly 100 yards. Notable among the other performers on the day 'were Mr Eric Martin's Labrador Don, in the Limit event; Mr P. E. Churcher’s Curly-coated Retriever. Rip of Mitcham, in the Puppy event, and Mr J. Curtin’s Labrador, Rose of Tralee, who put up a smart performance in the Consolation event. The judge, Mr Walter Harding, gave every satisfaction. At the end of the meeting a vote of thanks was passed to Mrs Walter Harding and her assistants for having provided the morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea. A vote of thanks was also passed to Mrs Wardell, for the use of the property, and to the secretary of the club, Mr G. F. Birkett. The trophies were presented by the club’s patron, Mr C. E. Grey, who congratulated all on the splendid day’s outing. The following were the results: — Open Land—Mr M. A. Rawlins's Labrador Retriever. Cleopatra May (86 points) 1; Mr W. O.
