HARRIER ACTIVITIES
KIATERE CLUB INVITATION RUN. WIN FOR L. BIRD. On Saturday the members and supporters of the Kiatere Harrier Club spent a very enjoyable afternoon, the occasion being an invitation of the Club President, Mr A. L. Askew, to. holo, a run from the Epiphany Hall. The seniors ran over a GA mile course the juniors over a 3,i mile course. L Bird, fourth last week, was the senior winner, and W. Burns, first last week, was second. In the juniors, I. Summers. second last week, was the winner and F. Sexton, winner last week, was second. The juniors were first away, and in a close finish. I. Summers performed very well to beat F. Sexton, who also ran up to form, with J. Hodgetts in third place. The following are detailed results:-—I. Summers (4.0). 24.1, 1; F. Sexton (2.30), 24.47. 2; J. Hodgetts i4.30>, 25.15, 3. Fastest times:—N. Jacobsen 21.56, 1; F. Sexton, 22.47, 2; I. Summers. 23.31. 3.
The seniors were despatched by Mr W. Ashworth L. Bird, C. Summers and A. MacKenzie were first off, followed 1.30 later by G. Bell. D. Nelson led the middle men, followed by R. Searancke. At the end of the first lap L. Bird lead C. Summers by 400 yards with G. Bell close behind. W. MacDonald lead the back markers with W. Burns in close attendance. Then in a bunch came D. Nelson, R. Searancke, Al MacDonald and A. MacDonald. L. Bird was never headed and won by 100 yards. Detailed results: L. Bird (7.30), 46.1, 1; W. Burns (1.0), 46.23, 2; R. Greeks (scr), 47.11, 3. Fastest times: R. Greeks 39.41, 1; W. Burns, 39.53, 2; W. MacDonald, 41.18, 3. The runners and. supporters were then entertained at afternoon tea. Trophies presented by two club enthusiasts, Messrs J. Barnes and W. Ashworth were handed by the jointdonor, W. Ashworth, to the various winners. W. MacDonald, club captain, thanked Mr and Mrs A. L. Askew for their invitation and Mr W. Ashworth for his generous donations of trophies. In the course of his reply, Mr Askew said he was very pleased to announce that in memory of one of tne club’s staunchest supporters, the late Mr Batkin, a trophy nad been presented to the club. This trophy, wnich is to be called the Batkin Memorial Trophy, was always to remain in the club, and could never be won outright. Next Saturday there will be a teams race for both seniors and juniors in preparation for the Wellington Provincial Championships on July 27. These races will start from the Solway showgrounds at 2.3 G p.m.
