MASTERTON CLUB
5J MILES SEALED HANDICAP. Eleven runners faced the starter, Mr J. J. Hunter, in a 51-mile sealed handicap run on Saturday from the Park Oval over part of the championship course. From a fast start G. Ready went to the front and it was only in the second lap that he was headed by Roy Shaw who, as usual, finished very solidly over the last two miles. The going was the worst experienced this year and troubled some of the competitors a lot. Ron Wyett finished very solidly in third place, after being well back in the first lap. The result of the sealed handicap was at follows: —S. L. Hatch, 32.18, I; C. Ross. 33.7. 2. Fastest times: R. Shaw. 33.56; G. Ready. 34.2. Hatch ran a much improved race and. now locks to be coming rapidly back to his old form. As this was the last race before the Wellington Provincial Cross-country championships, the Masterton team is expected to be announced shortly.
