The Baby Carnival which has now been running for the past five weeks will be brought to a conclusion tonight with a dance. Right from the start of the contest between the Fire Brigade and Civil Servants, public interest has been well maintained and it is confidently expected that the sum of £3OO will be realised as a result of the carnival. The final functions of the rival camps have been well attended. On Friday night last the Civil Servants held a very enjoyable dance in the Odd Fellows’ Hall. Marenzi’s Orchestra provided the music and the M’s.C. were Messrs V. Wimsett and R. Mountjoy. The hall was decorated with ferns and evergreens. The ladies’ committee provided its usual tasty supper. The Gala Day arranged for Saturday had to be abandoned on account of the weather. This was most unfortunate as the combined committees had spared no effort to ensure its success. The intended programme included a wheelborrow race from the town to the Domain, a tug-of-war and football match. Civil Servants and. Fire Brigade. Despite the wet conditions, however, the latter was held and resulted in a win for the Civil Servants by 14 points to 3. The winners were able to field a full fifteen while the Fire Brigade could only muster 12 players. Despite this handicap the Brigade made a determined fight of it. , Mr W. Udy ably controlled the game. After the match a social was held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall when several toasts were honoured. The Fire Brigade conducted a highly successful house party at the residence of Mr H. Allan, Rongomai, on Saturday night. The entertainment provided included dancing in the woolshed, games and competitions. The music for the dancing was provided by Messrs H. Allan (piano-accordion) and P. Jensen (accordion), and Mr Burneys system. Supper was provided by the ladies. Personal Items. Constable A. McCowan is on his annual leave and Constable G.
