OTHER PEOPLE’S IDEAS

TAX ON POULTRY FLOCKS (To the Editor.) Sir, — I would be pleased if you would correct a rather serious error in a report appearing in your issue of even date. The report was given of a meeting held by the Women’s Division of Hie Farmers’ Union on Wednesday last. h, speaking at that meeting I did ni>'. liiat during the war period the l.az of 2s fid per hundred hens for all 11'wUi of 25 birds or more would not be collected: I could not say this beeair.e only Parliament could do so. What I did say was "there would be no inspection of housing” and I added "there had been none hitherto.” I also said that the tax on fowls was not made where the owner did “not sell egg-;.” If eggs are sold, then every one owing hens or ducks, and having 25 birds or more, and selling eggs, must register his run and pay 2s 6d for every hundred of birds or part of a hundred. It seems to me that a great deal of fuss is being made about this very small tax, especially considering the great assistance poultry farmers have received from the Poultry Board. In any' case, it is a statutory charge, and must be paid, or else one becomes liable ta Court proceedings. Thanking you in anticipation,—Yours, etc, W. F. STENT. Government member New Zealand Poultry Board. Carterton, July 13.
