WAIRARAPA UNION SATURDAY’S PLAY OF GOOD STANDARD. GLADSTONE & CARTERTON WIN. The Wairarapa Rugby Union's interclub championship fixtures were continued in wintry weather on Saturday. The grounds were very heavy. The leaders in the senior championship. Gladstone and Carterton, both maintained their positions, when Gladstone beat Red Star by 21 points to 5 and Carterton beat Greytown by 18 points to 3at Carterton. Old Boys won from Masterton in an entertaining match. Play, despite the unfavourable conditions was of a good standard throughout, and taking all in general was well worth seeing. SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP GLADSTONE BEAT RED STAR. AN UNUSUAL INCIDENT. Gladstone beat Reel Star in a bright, open exhibition of the code at Gladstone by 21 points to 5. Red Star fielded a team of thirteen players and consequently was handicapped throughout the match. An incident occurred when Gladstone had carried play well into Red Star territory. A scrum took place just outside Stars goal posts, and although Stars managed to hook the ball Gladstone’s extra weight told and Stars were pushed oft' the ball up against their posts. Gladstone gave an extra push and with a rendering sound the post commenced to fall. In the melee to avoid the posts, Mason, a Gladstone player, had the foresight to fall on the ball, and a try was awarded Gladstone, although members of both teams were looking on with amazement. Stars bolstered the posts up and enabled Rciri to convert the try. The post was temporarily wired up and with the aid of a spade repairs were effected enabling the game to be continued. Stars ’cry came from R. Howard, being converted by W. Butcher. Howard played a very sound spoiling game. Without Fitzpatrick and Hays in the forwards and Mowatt on the wing Stars did not appear to take the match very seriously, but if the ball had come out to the backs, more often the final score might have made different reading. For Gladstone. further points were added when G. Colquhoun kicked a nice field goal, and Foreman and Reiri each kicked a penalty and Reiri made a good opening for Colquhoun to handle and pass on to K. Joblin, who scored a good try well out. C. Wyeth also scored. The game was very even, more so than the scores would indicate, as Gladstone ran up its score in the final stages of the game, when extra men told. Mr B. M. Hurley handled the game in a capable manner. OLD BOYS V. MASTERTON. BRIGHT CONTEST AT MEMORIAL PARK. Masterton went under to Old Boys in a fast, fairly open game played at Memorial Park on a very heavy ground. In the early stages of the game Masterton attacked fiercely, but Old Boys defence was sound. The first try of the match came when Wilton handled for J. Polson to make a brilliant run and score well out. O'Callaghan missed with a good kick which rebounded off the post from a difficult angle. A keen forward struggle then ensued. Old Boys having a slight advantage. Masterton then equalised when after a clever back movement had just missed scoring, Gr.oube forced his way over for a converted try. Masterton 5, Old Boys 3. Polson, Munn and Wilton were seen to advantage in some Old Boys attacks. Meurk secured and macle a bright run down the side-line from a back movement. O'Callaghan converted, making the half-time score. Old Boys 8. Mastert.on 5. Old Boys were frequently penalised for off-side play. Both sides were tackling well, and opened play up for some bright back attacks. Old Boys saw plenty of the ball and S. Cardno at half-back gavc-good service to his team. Masterton opened the second spell strongly and carried play deep into Old Boys' territory. O'Callaghan was clearing well and saved from many dangerous positions. Old Boys missed a certain try when from his own 25 Polson intercepted and dribbled the ball the length of the field. With only one man to beat he kicked the ball too hard and it went into the dead ball territory. An addition to Old Boys score came from a penalty kicked by O'Callaghan. N. and D. Faulknor showed up in attacks on Masterton's goal line, and V. Gray, I-I. Ewington and lan Percy stood out for hard work in the Masterion team. Gray and Ewington were particularly active. Shortly before the call of time O’Callaghan went over to add three more points to Old Boys' tally. Play finished in midfield with the score Old Boys 14. Masterton 6. Mr W. Grantham was an efficient referee. The services of the St. John Ambulance men were called upon several times. CARTERTON BEAT GREYTOWN. REID CUP CONTEST. In one of the most interesting games played on, the Carterton Showgrounds this season Carterton beat Greytown. The match was run in conjunction with the Reid Cup. which was retained by Carterton. The contestants usually stage a good match and in the score of 18 points to 3 there was little indication of the run of play. Both teams were without their full complement. Veteran Martin Parker went on for Greytown anxl Grange took the place of G. Blake in the first spell for Carterton. the latter having replaced D.
Smith, who had his shoulder injured in the Hawke's Bay-Wairarapa match last week, and was injured again on Saturday. •. Carterton won the toss and defended the southern goal. Both sides started off willingly, and each had shots at goals for infringements, which failed to materialise. The scrums and line outs were evenly contested with Carterton showing slight superiority in the latter. It was jsome time before a score was registered, when from a line out in mid-field the ball went to F. Fitzgerald. who sold a beautiful “dummy." to the Greytown backs and made off for the line. Drawing the defence, he shot the ball to Mahupuka, who passed on to Brown, who transferred to Thompson, who scored, F. Fitzgerald failed to convert. Give and take play followed. The Carterton forwards headed by Taylor, McPhee and- Smith look play to Greytown territory and Carterton were awarded a free kick from which Mahupuku goaled. From a scrum the ball went to Lipinski to Fitzgerald, to Mahupuku, to Brown and on to Reading, who was thrown out on the corner flag. Relief came to Greytown from the line when they were given a free kick for an infringement, and the pressure was eased. F. Fitzgerald made a solo effort and dodging and "dummying," he crossed the line, but lost, the ball, but Taylor, following up fast, scored. Mahapuku’s kick hit the upright. Spooner. Stringfellow, Humphries, Conolly and Sayles were associated in. a splendid rush, Grey town being awarded a free kick in a handy position, Stringfellow missing. Not to be denied the Greytown forwards headed by Stringfellow and Humphries came again and as a result, M. Congden crossed for a good try. The kick failed, leaving the halftime score at 9-3, in Carterton’s favour. In the second spell Carterton's defence was good, and the passing efforts by their backs enabled them to put on a further 9 points, which were scored by Brown and Thompson (2), all the kick at goal failing. The game ending in favour of Carterton by 18 to 3. Mr M. McMenamin controlled the game. WAIRARAPA GAMES REFEREES FOR SATURDAY. The following are the fixtures and referees for Saturday next: — Senior.
