On the recommendation of the finance committee accounts amounting to £74 13s 3d were passed for payment. University entrance and special grants totalling £267 10s were also passed for payment. The secretary reported that the Nos. I, 2 and 3 accounts were in credit at £969 Us 4d, £390 3s 3d and £62 0s 9d, respectively. The headmasters of the Solway and West schools wrote thanking the Trust for grants allocated. A letter was received from the St Vincent de Paul Society expressing appreciation of the Trust’s assistance to a necessitous case. The Masterton Y.M.C.A. wrote thanking the Trust for the courtesy extended to Mr E. M. Hodder when he waited on the Trust at its last meeting in connection with the local appeal for funds, and forwarded a copy of the annual report and balance sheet. The secretary submitted a report on a meeting of representatives of the Masterton Borough Council held on June 24 relative to Memorial Park matters, when the following points were discussed: (1) That the work embodied in the report brought down by Messrs Gardner and Robinson be carried out as follows—grandstand repainting £l2O, fences, etc. £2O, enclosure to be tar sealed £25, structural alterations and renovations £lOO, at a total estimated cost of £295; (2) that the additional sum of £l5O be placed on the Trust estimates for the current year; (3) that legislation be promoted to give effect to the offer made by trustees to contribute £l5O per annum in perpetuity and that the sum be a permanent recurring charge upon its revenue. Following a full discussion it was resolved "that the committee recommends that the Trust Lands Trust find the sum of £l5O for capital expenditure immediately and that the trustees will thereafter pay to the Masterton Borough Council the sum of £l5O per annum in perpetuity towards the upkeep and development of the Cameron and Soldiers’ Memorial Park. The annual payments to start as from the financial year commencing April 1, 1940." Messrs J. M. Laing and E. G. Eton spoke in support of the proposals, stressing the importance of the matter to residents of the Small Farms Area. It was decided to support the committee’s proposals. An amendment, that the sum of £l5O be contributed for a period of 30 years is to be submitted for further consideration of the Borough Council.
