CARTERTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Carterton Women's Institute was held in the Masonic Hall, Carterton. yesterday, when Mrs H. Knutson presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of “The Ode to Friendship" followed by ■*** the Aspiration and the prayer foi peace. MThe president outlined the scheme "Y of British children as I /riginatcd by Mrs Page, of Masterton. and explained that it was separate from the scheme sponsored by the Government. The appeal issued by the Dominion President for support for the Lady Galway Fund was read. It was resolved that the institute should carry out the suggestion made that each member should supply at least one garment and if members throughout New Zealand do this it will result in 30.000 garments being supplied by the members of the Women's Institutes. Mr W. Martin gave a very interesting and instructive address taking as his subject "Animal Life of our own Land.” He referred to many animals which are not found in any other part of the world and the members were grateful for the varied items brought to their notice. At the conclusion Mrs Knutson thanked Mr Martin and presented Mrs Martin, who was present bj r invitation, with a charming shoulder spray, Mr Martin being given a buttonhole of daphne. The results of the competitions arc as follow: —Eggless cake and recipe Mrs G. Steflert 1. Mrs M. J. Woods 2 Mrs Pi. Grimmer 3. Man’s knitted scarf, Mrs G. Steffert 1, Mrs R. Grimmer 2. Mrs T. E. Hawker 3. The competitions were judged by Mrs Tankersley who was presented with a dainty shoulder spray. Mrs R. Grimmer was appointed the representative of the Institute on the Carterton District Patriotic Committee. It was resolved that a sewing circle be formed, and that members meet once a week at Miss Wolters’s office. The competitions for next month are: Posy made from sweets; Air Force balaclava; gems. Aftei-gLon tea and the singing of the National'Anthem concluded a very pleasant gathering. BOY SCOUTS CARD PARTY. The weekly card party of the Carterton Boy Scout committee for patriotic purposes was held on Wednesday. There was a good attendance and the prizes were won as follows: Ladies, Mrs O’Reilly 1, Mrs J. Lenihan 2; men, Mr Papanui 1, Mr Knutson 2. The other prizes went to Mesdames Hill and Hemi. The annual general meeting of the Carterton Troop of the Boy Scouts will be held in the Scout Den, Carterton, on Monday evening next. The annual report and balance sheet will be submitted and the election of officers for the ensuing 12 months will take place. The public are asked to show their appreciation of the scout movement by attending the meeting.
WEDDING WILSON—ROBERTS. The Carterton Methodist Church was the scene of a very pretty wedding on Wednesday morning last, when May Dorothy, daughter of Mr and Mrs F. W. Roberts, of Kent Street, Carterton. was married to Reginald, son of the late Mr and Mrs T. H. Wilson, of Carterton. The Rev Daglish officiated and Mrs Nightingale presided at the organ. The bride, who was escorted by her father wore a lovely trained gown of magnolia satin made with long, tightfittinit sleeves, cowl neckline finished at th® back of the neck with graceful sash effect. The hemline and upper sleeve were appliqued in rich design of roses and lovers' knots. Her embroidered tulle veil was held in place by a circlet of orange blossoms and she carried a bouquet of white lilies, freesias and maiden hair fern. The bridesmaids were Misses Rita Jones and Joy Roberts, both of Carterton. Miss Jones wore blush pink and Miss Roberts powder blue ' silver threaded frocks of flat crepe cut on classical lines, with long tight-fitting sleeves. They wore matching floral coronets and carried posies of freesias and winter roses to tone. The hymn, “Perfect Love" was sung and during..the signing of the register, Miss Ruth Surtees rendered "Where’er Ye Walk." The best man was Alastair Matheson, of Carrington, and the groomsman Ron Wright, of Carterton. The church was beautifully decorated with palms, and bowls of Iceland poppies and soleil d'or bulbs. The reception was held in the adjoining Sunday school which was tastefully decorated with geisha plum blossoms and birch foliage. The guests were received by Mrs Roberts, who wore a lido blue ensemble embroidered in bronze design, a marten fur necklet and blue velour hat to match. Her posy was of pale gold chrysanthemums and freesias. Assisting her was Miss M. E. Wilson (sister of the bridegroom) who wore a petunia wool frock and hat to match. Her shoulder spray was of matching, winter roses and fern. When the bride left, she wore a smartly cut costume of pin-striped navy suiting, white satin blouse, navy peach bloom hat and navy accessories and handsome fur stole. She carried a cloak of navy chenille cloth. Mr and Mrs Reginald Wilson will live at Carrington. Church Service. Church of England services will be held at Gladstone at 11 a.m. on Sunday and at Parkvale at 2 p.m.
' WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT PARKVALE. The monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute was held in the Parkvale Hall on Wednesday afternoon, Mrs B. Renall presiding. The meeting opened with the "Ode to Friendship,” Aspiration, and a prayer for peace. Correspondence was read from headquarters regarding the cancellation of the Dominion Conference. An invitation to the Young Farmers and Women’s Division Birthday Party was received, and delegates were appointed to attend. A most interesting demonstration on the making of felt novelties was given by Mrs Dagg, of Masterton. Mrs Dagg had an excellent collection of finished articles which were inspected by members. She was accorded a hearty vote of thanks and presented with a shoulder spray. The monthly competitions judged by Mrs Dagg resulted as follows: —Seniors: Scones. Mrs B. Ren'all, 1; Mr J. Members were asked to bring along garments for refugee children to be forwarded to Wellington for the Lady Galway Patriotic Guild. Stark, who has been in Masterton Public Hospital for the past five weeks, and who underwent an operation for appendicitis, has returned to his home. A son of Mr and Mrs W. L. Haste, of j South Carterton. is an inmate of Masterton Public Hospital suffering with pleurisy and pneumonia. Mr Jas Hannah, a very old Cartertoll resident, who is practically a cripple and whose health has been failing for some time, has been admitted to the Buchanan Home at Greytown. The death occurred in the Greytown Hospital yesterday of the eight-year-old daughter of Mrs Eva Hughes, of Carterton. First Lamb of Season. The first lamb of the season, a well nourished and healthy black face, has been born on Mr R. Goodin's farm al Carrington. Savage Club Concert. The final statement in connection with the concert recently staged by the local Savage Club for patriotic purposes shows that the gross takings i amounted to £43 5s 61d and after ex-
penses had been met a cheque for £3B 12s l£d was handed in to the patriotic executive. This is a very fine effort on the part of the members of the Savage Club. The members of the executive express their thanks for the assistance received and to the public for attending in such large numbers. Parcel Evening. The Parkvale Hall should be filled tomorrow evening when a “parcel evening" will, be tendered to Miss N. Renal!, a popular young lady who is shortly to be married. Good music, floor and supper will be provided. The Parkvale and district ladies are asked to provide a basket.
