IS’ PAY
trMORE ADVOCATES INCREASE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON. This Day. "The soldier’s wage of 7s 6d a day is altogether inadequate,” said Mr Atmore (Independent, Nelson) in the House of Representatives yesterday. “I do not know whether that is a popular statement to make, but we know very well that if a man is engaged on dangerous work or dirty work he gets extra pay, but for the most dangerous and dirtiest of all jobs he gets 7s 6d on account and the rest he takes out in glory,” he continued. “It is about time that we recognised that he is entitled to a standard wage and if we were not dissipating onethird of our national income in interest we would be able to pay a more adequate rate. It is time also that we recognised that we have not the right to ask men to go to the front for a pittance to carry out this highly patriotic and unfortunately necessary work.”
