Poutatau’s Good Win. The two-year-old Colossus gelding Poutatau. owned by Mr J. M. James, of Masterton, easily disposed of the big field in the Trial Plate at Trentham yesterday. He was bracketed with Silver Shekel and they were the joint favourites with Rakanui. The bracketed favourites together made all the running to the straight from Black Majesty, Deflation, Vienna, Great Blaze and Native Chief. Silver Shekel weakened in the run home, but Poutatau drew right away and scored a very comfortable win from Black Majesty, who was fast being overhauled at the end by Native Chief and Air Port. Black Majesty and Native Chief had every chance, but Air Port put up a good effort as he was well back in the early stages. He came home exceptionally well. Silver Shekel finished seventh. The winner is a brother to Dannevirke. who has shown good winning form in Melbourne. Purchased last Easter after showing promise at Feilding. Poutatau has now won twice in two starts for his new owner, Mr J. James, Masterton. and on yesterday’s form he is well above the average. RACING FIXTURES July 13—Wellington. July 20—Matamata. VICTORIA STEEPLECHASE I

FINAL ACCEPTORS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 11. Final acceptors for the Grand National Steeplechase, which will start at 3.30 p.m. : arc: Turf Boy. Bully Hayes, Brightello, National Debt, Blackford. Bite Again, Martext, My Blarney, Rhymster, Collier, Wakerife, Sarno, Kent. Man of Ayr. Hearty Laugh, Montargis, Gracstello. PLANS FOR BEALIVRE DECISION TO BE MADE ON SATURDAY. (Bv Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) BRISBANE, July 11. Mr E. Harnett, owner of Beaulivre, stated today that no decision would be made till Saturday as to whether Beaulivre will run in the Doomben Cup. Beaulivre did a most impressive cup trial today. He covered seven furlongs in 1.314. finishing hard held. He would probably have made sensational time if ridden right out. A Mudlark Wins. The mudlark Kena, who ran third in the Parliamentary Handicap last year, scored a meritorious win yesterday in this handicap from one of the rank outsiders Philemup. who paid more than the winner did straightout. After the rush for the early positions Amigo went to the front and, slowing down the field, had Gaelic Song, Dark Eagle, Philemup, Lazybones, Cherokee. Kena, and. Aurora's Star in the bunch nearest him. There was not much change in the running except that Lazybones went up to Amigo and Classform, who had been last out of the straight, made a fast forward move from the mile post and ,was up on the outer with Kena and Aurora's Star. Nearing the straight Sly Fox and Philemup became more prominent, but Amigo and Lazybones were still leading as they headed for the judge. Outside the distance Kena drew ahead and was challenged strongly by Philemup. the latter failing by a small margin to get up. Philemup's, performance was outstanding. Chat’s Career. Until her victory in the Wellington Steeplechase yesterday, the Siegfried mare Chat had not attained to any place of distinction on the turf, either as a flat performer or as a jumper. Her career had not been remarkable for any particular exploit, but she early showed more than average ability in heavy going.' She began racing as a two-year-old. | and now, at the close of her six-year-old career, she has contested 65 races for nine wins, as many seconds, 10 thirds and £2147 in stakes, including the value of the trophy attached to the Wellington Steeplechase prize. Bred in 1933 by Mr T. White, the black filly raced for two and a-half seasons in the colours of Mr R. H. W. Holden, Hawke’s Bay, in that period winning three races and £367. In the summer of 1937 she passed into the hands of Mrs G. M. Bennett, for whom she continued to race until this winter, when she resumed' after an absence of nearly 10 months in the livery of Mr C. P. Thorburn, Palmerston North. For Mrs Bennett, Chat won four times and collected £B2O, but when she began racing again from the Woodville stable of A. M. Wright she blossomed out as a steeplechaser, and had an immediate success, winning the Hack and Hunters’ Steeples at Otaki in May. This was followed by two thirds at the Manawatu meeting and another third in the Grandstand Steeples at Wanganui. That was her consistent but hardly inspiring record as a steeplechaser when she went out to contest the Wellington event, which she won very decisively. The result undoubtedly is a tribute to her trainer, who has had a long and successful association with jumpers. Mr Thorburn has now won two races and gained three thirds with Chat, winning £BB5 and a trophy valued at £75. Taleteller, the dam of Chat, was by Mystification, son of Apremont, from Tattle, by Mahaki from Whisper, by Albany from Tell Tale, by Traducer. This is an old colonial family that has had fevz distinguished members for many years. Mahaki, sire of Tattle, was a half-brother, by Ingomar, to Stepniak.
