S.M. COURT CASES AT YESTERDAY'S SITTING. (“Times-Age” Special;) The monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate’s Court was held at Carterton yesterday, Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M., presiding. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following cases: —Hill and Hughes v. R. N. Campbell, claim £4B 18s lid. Judgment by plaintiff by def*ilt with costs. Hill and Hughes V. Campbell, claim £l5 and costs; W.F.C.A. Ltd. v. F. W. Money, claim £2 Os 4d and costs; C. Deller v. C. McHardy, £2 19s 6d and costs; Garrity Bros. v. W. Clark, £l3 and costs. | Carterton Distributing Co-operative Society Ltd. (in liquidation) v. D. Udy. £2 and costs; Geo. A. Vincent v. Lou. Cadwallader, £3 12s and costs; Howard E. Jackson v. J. E. Loader, £4 6s and costs. Judgment summonses: Watson and Co. v. L. Martin, claim £9 Us Bd. The Magistrate ordered the amount to be paid forthwith in default 9 days impnsonment in the Wellington gaol. Manawatu Tyre Builders (D. L. Taverner) v. D. Taylor and N. L. Napier, claim £7 2s 3d. Defendant Taylor was placed in the witness box and after being questioned by plaintiff s solicitor the case was struck out. WILFUL DAMAGE. Roy Williams was charged by the police that on June 1 he did wilfully damage a scat in the Regent Pictu.e Theatre. Accused pleaded guilty and was convicted and fined £1 with costa 10s, and ordered to make good the damage to the extent of £l. TRAFFIC CASES. Lillian Margaret Vitsky was charged by the police that on May 19 she failed to carry a warrant of fitness in connection with her motor car. She pleaded guilty and was fined 5s with 10s costs. The Traffic Department proceeded against Stuart Rossmore McLaughlin for having exceeded the speed limit through the Borough of Carterton on May 3.1. He was fined £3 with costs 10 Tozer pleaded guilty to a charge brought by Traffic Officer Nicholson, of having driven a motor car without having a warrant of fitness and also with having driven the vehicle without lights on May 31. Accused was fined £2 with costs for having failed to possess a warrant of fitness and was fined £1 with costs 10s for having driven without lights. The Magistrate said that driving without lights was the most dangerous practice he knew of. GOLF CARTERTON v MARTINBOROUGH. The Carterton Men’s Club will play a match against Martinborough on Saturday next and will be represented as under: — T At. Martinborough. A team: H. J. Dudson- J. Steel, C. K. Goodin, T. Hughes, D. Barrett. The remaining members of the club will arrange their own partners foi a ■medal round. The ladies’ will play a L.G.U. medal round and also compete for Mrs Robinson's trophy. The draw is as follows. No 7 tee: Mrs Candy and Mrs Moroney, Miss C. Berrill and Miss M. Campbell. Mrs A. T. Murray and Mrs Dwane. Mrs’ Forbes and Miss P. Renall. No 13 tee: Mrs Callender and, Mrs Harrington, ’ Mrs Orr and Miss M. Smart, Miss J. Booth and Mrs Ross, Mrs Colson and Miss Lamb, Mrs R. N. Campbell and Miss I. Corlet. 11 tee: Mrs Pointon and Miss Frcfer. Mrs Robinson and Miss Peters, Miss Armstrong and Miss Hamer, Miss McFarlane and Miss Orr, Miss V. Corlet and Miss Shankland. No 16 tee: Miss M. Lawrence and Miss Beaven, Mrs Goodin and Mrs Hindley, Mrs Gustofson and Miss Sorenson. Mrs Hindley and Miss Beaven will be in charge of afternoon tea. PATRIOTIC MEETING APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. A meeting of the general committee of the Carterton and District Patriotic Committee was held last evening, the Mayor presiding. The report of the preliminary .committee meeting held on' July 4 was read by the Mayor, and on the motion of Mr Geo Brown it was resolved that the general purposes committee consist of those originally nominated, together with one representative each from Gladstone, Dalefield-Matarawa, Car-rington-Belevedere, Clareville and Parkvale-Waihakeke, with two ladies representing the various women’s organisations in the district, and that the Mayor of Carterton and the chairman of the Wairarapa South County Council be ex-officio members of the committee. It was resolved that the ladies’ organisations be asked to appoint their representative on the general committee. It was decided that the soldiers' comfort committee consist of six members, as follows: Misses O. Wolters, C. Berrill. Mesdames H. E. Ordish. P. Hodder. R. N. Every and C. Stubbs. The following committee to control parcels for overseas was appointed: Mesdames E. T. Beaven. L. J. Fairbrother, Misses O. Wolters, C. Berrill and Messrs J. Steel, E. T. Beaven, and A. G. Rabbitts. The undermentioned were appointed a rehabilitation committee: The Mayor of Carterton and chairman of the' Wairarapa South County Council as ex-officio members, and Messrs G.

Brown. L. H. Smart. W. J. Thomas, J. Steel. W. A. Hart. A. T. Murray. Each of the country districts are to be asked to'appoint a representative on the general committee and it was decided that three ladies be asked to represent the women's organisations in the district. The Mayor outlined the scheme for the evacuation of British children for the duration of the war, and the following were elected a committee under authority of the Wairarapa zone committee to deal with applications, etc: The Mayor, the Rev W. F. Stent, W. Martin. Mrs Tyler and Misses Wolters and J. Moncrieff. Lady Galway Guild. A group of ladies in Carterton and district have decided to meet at the residence of Mrs Jas Fisher. Clareville, each week for the purpose of making clothing, etc, under the Lady Galway Guild for the refugees who have found it necessary to exile themselves from their native country. The first case of 65 articles will be forwarded to Wellington very shortly. Personal Items. Mr lan Fisher, son of Mr and Mrs Jas Fisher, Clareville, who is employed by the Postal Department, has been transferred from Mangaweka to Wairoa. Mr C. Phillips, of Clareville, has found it necessary to re-enter the Masterton Public Hospital for treatment. Send-off to Mr F. Hill. Members of the Carterton Golf Club gathered at the Marquis of Normanby Hotel yesterday afternoon to bid farewell to Mr Fred Hill, a member of the club, who left this afterrioon for Christchurch, where he will enter the Wigram Camp. Mr Geo Brown, president of the club, in making a presentation to Mr Hill, said they were proud he was answering the call to duty. Mr Hill had been a most enthusiastic member of the club and they would miss him. On behalf of club members he asked Mr Hill to accept a hold-all. He wished Mr Hill the best of luck. Messrs Roydhouse and G. S. George spoke in a similar strain. Mr Hill’s health was drunk and "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow” was sung. Mr Hill suitably replied. Several apologies for absence were received from members. Entertaining Troops. A meeting of the sub-committee controlling the scheme for entertaining soldiers was held last evening in the Dalefield Dairy Co’s building. The Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided. The action of the Mayor in arranging presentations, etc, to Sappers J. Johnston and P. Fitzgerald at short notice, was endorsed. Mr H. T. Lecte was added to the entertainment committee. It was resolved that presentations to soldiers be approximately of the value of £3. It was decided that the entertainment of troops in future take the form' of a social and dance and that the Savage Club be asked to arrange for items and that three representatives of the district committee be asked to speak. The entertaining committee consists of Mesdames A. T. Murray. L. J. Fairbrother. E. W. Gayfer, R. N. Campbell. R. P. Wakelin, P. Beere, C. Savill. M. O'Reilly, Miss N. Tucker, Messrs D. L. Taverner (Mayor), W. A. Hart, Gibb Johnston, G. Brown. B. iH. Gayfer. E. McKenzie, A. T. Murray, J. A. B. Lawrence and the Rev W. J. Couling.
