GROWING WHEAT
VARIETIES FOR SPRING SOWING SUGGESTIONS BY INSTITUTE. GUIDE TO FARMERS. Wheat gives the best returns when sown in May or June. But in some seasons such as the present one, it is impossible to get all the wheat sown by the normal date, and the question then arises as to what is the latest date at which certain varieties can be sown with fair hopes of success, states the Wheat Research Institute. The following notes are intended to be a guide on this point. But they are not intended to be more than a guide,, nor are they intended to recommend one variety rather than another, except from this aspect of date of sowing. July: All wheats customarily autumn sewn in any particular districts may still be sown. Holdfast should be sown as soon as possible, after the middle of August it is probably risky. August: Tuscan, Fife-Tuscan, Cross 7, Marquis, Jumbuck and Tainui. If Dreadnought seed has been bought, it may still be sown.
September: Tuscan. Fife-Tuscan.
Cross 7, Marquis. Jumbuck and Tainui. October: Jumbuck and Tainui — chiefly on heavy land with good water retaining capacity. This list is not intended to suggest that any land should be held back from wheat merely to suit a special variety. On the contrary, all varieties should be sown as soon as soil conditions are right: but in those cases where sowing is unavoidably delayed, the wheats mentioned lor any’ month may still oe sown with reasonable chances of a lair yield if the season is suitable.
