Senator K. Wheeler (Democrat) denounced the nomination of Mr H. L. Stimson and Colonel Knox as Secretaries of War and the Navy respectively. Senators R. A. Taft and G. P. Nye said Mr Stimson’s confirmation was likely to embroil the United States in the European war. Senator Taft added that the course Mr Stimson advocated, which President Roosevelt sympathetically approved, logically demanded and immediate declaration of war against Italy and Germany. He claimed that President Roosevelt had “left himself clear” to advocate such a declaration.
