ITALIAN LIES

CHALLENGED PROMPTLY IN LONDON FIGHTING IN AFRICA ALLEGED DESTRUCTION OF 50 CARS. MORE THAN TOTAL NUMBER PARTICIPATING. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright? (Received This Day, 10.5 a.m.) ROME, July 9. A communique states: “At least fifty enemy armoured motor vehicles have been destroyed in the last few days on the Cyrenaica front. ‘Tn East Africa our aviation bombed enemy positions in the Majir zone, in Kenya, hitting an ammunition dump. Several privates were captured in the zone of Turchana, Kenya. “Following a bombing action by our planes, our troops raided Kurmuk, in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan, destroying a radio station and munitions dump.

“Enemy planes raided Massawa, Diredawa and Zula, causing a total of two deaths and one wounded. No material damage was done.” A London message states: "The authorities, referring to the Italian communique, state: “With regard to the action which allegedly occurred in the Cyrenaica border, the Italian communique avoids mentioning that British armoured units operated sixty miles inside Italian territory. The reported destruction of fifty cars is untrue, exceeding the number of British cars participating. During successful operations in this area, British armoured units lost only three or four cars.”
