TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD
MEETING IN MASTERTON ENJOYABLE PROGRAMME. ADDRESS ON BRITISH MUSIC. The Masterton Townswomen’s Guild held its monthly meeting yesterday in the Y.M.C.A. Hall when Mrs Bennett presided over a large attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode, the reciting of the Aspirations and the Prayer for Peace. The President thanked all members who contributed parcels for the soldiers and clothing for refugees. The Roll Call “a holiday adventure,” provided humourous entertainment. The competitions resulted as follows: —Wholemeal Sponge, Mrs Donovan 1. Mrs Bennett 2, Mrs Coe 3. Darning. Mrs Taylor 1, Mrs Pickering 2. Afternoon tea was served and then Mrs Miller Hope was introduced and presented with a shoulder spray. Mrs Hope gave an interesting address on British Music, and traced the developments of music from early days in Britain till the present day composers, and illustrated her talks with Folk Songs and pianoforte solos. The following items were rendered by her pupils:—“The Cuckoo,” "There was an Old Woman,” and "All Through the Night," duet by Misses Beryl Perrin and Audrey Bilderbeck, "The Twa Bonnie Maidens,” by the Quartette, Misses Brenda Jaine, Beryl Perrin. Audrey Bilderbeck, and Joan Simpson. The pupils then gave two part-songs, “Little Red Lark," and "The Apple Woman.” Five members of the Guild Musical Circle rendered a two-part song, “The Banks of Allan Water,” was sung by Miss D. O’Donnell and Mesdames Burke, Graham, Scrivener and Taylor. The meeting‘closed with the singing of the Ode and the National Anthem.
