The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna Borough Council was held last evening, there being present, the Mayor, Mr W. Simpson, Councillors D. D. Ryan. W. N. Priest, K. Marenzi ,and P. S. Page. Leave of absence was granted Councillors W. Olsen and E. M. Simmers. The Town Clerk, Mr B. Dinnan, reported on the borough’s finances as follows: —District Fund Account, dr. £2BO 12s 7d; Domain Account, cr. £l2 13s 6d; rate arrears, £519 13s 3d; cemetery arrears, £26 ss; library arrears, 16s. The Health Inspector reported for the quarter ending June 30 as follows: —Notifiable infectious disease: No cases have occurred, and present indications are satisfactory. Foodshops and eating houses: All these premises have been inspected at varying intervals, and licenses where required have been renewed. The general standard of all these premises is being well maintained. Buildings, drainage and sanitary plumbing: The usual perusal of plans prior to the issue of permits has been made. Structural inspections during the course of erection, also inspection and tests applied to all new drainage and sanitary plumbing work. The general standard is good and no difficulty has been met with in regard to this "matter. Complaints and reported nuisances of varying natures have been investigated and where necessary steps to abate such have been taken. The report was adopted. Building permits were granted io H. M. Neilson, High Street, motor shed £lO, and H. Smith, Duncan Street, additions £2OO. The librarian reported that for the period April 1 to June 30, the books issued were 855. The subscribers number 67. The total subscriptions and extra book fees for the period amounted to £lO 17s 3d. Twelve new publications have been catalogued and placed on the shelves of the Lending Department. The Eketahuna District High School Committee wrote requesting that a footpath be provided near the entrance to the primary department, Station Road. It was decided that the vicinity be inspected with a view to seeing what arrangements could be made in regard to granting the request. BASKETBALL PATRIOTIC TOURNAMENT. One of the largest crowds seen in the Drill Hall, Pahiatua, witnessed many keen contests in the Patriotic Basketball Tournament held by the Bush Basketball Association on Saturday night. On Saturday evening the Eketahuna Girl Guide Company and Brownie Pack celebrated their first birthday with a party held in the Anglican schoolroom. The Guides’ birthday cake, made and iced by Mrs D. Fraser, had one candle, which was lit and blown out by Joan Whetton and Nancy Fordyce, respectively, the eldest and youngest Guides. The Brownies’ cake, made and donated by Miss A. Anderson, also had one candle, which was lit and blown out by Mary Williams and Mary Christie. Joanna Anderson and Geraldine Ives cut the first pieces of the cake. Following the tea was a community sing, the accompaninistes being Mrs Curry and Miss M. Wilson. Miss K. Herbert, Brown Owl, then asked Mrs Fraser (president) to present the Brownies’ service stars. Oneyear stars were presented to Kathleen Ryan, Alma Ryan. Shirley Ives, Ngaire Davis. Audrey Johanson. Diana McAlister, Lois Bowering. Audrey Brown. Miss M. McAnulty (captain) presented the following Guides with their service stars; Four years, Nola Hancock; three years. June Hancock; one year, S. Walton. J. Hornblow, J. Tolley, A. Hansen, R. Fraser, J. Waterreus, I Waterreus, P. Johanson, C.
McAlister. H. Ives, M. Gray, J. Whetton, J. Campbell. Two plays, "The Surprise” and “The Magic Polish” were given by the Guide Company. After these some excellent items were presented: Drill by the Brownies, songs and rounds by the Guides. The solo items were:— Song, Kathleen Ryan; song and recitation, C. McAlister; recitations, M. Gray, K. Ryan and D. McAlister; pianoforte, Nancy Fordyce. The Brownies made a presentation of three embroidered handkerchiefs to Miss H. Fraser, Tawny Owl. who is leaving the district. The Guide captain and the Brown Owl, on behalf of the Guides and Brownies, thanked the parents and the committee for having provided the birthday party. The Brownies concluded the evening's entertainment with the Grand Howl and the Goodnight Song. All present joined in singing "God Defend New Zealand” and the National Anthem. GOLF CLUB WHITE CUP DRAW. The following is the draw for the first round of the White Cup. These games must be played on Saturday or Sunday:—J. Dickson vO. Walton; Page v Fordyce; D. Anderson handed in a card all square. In the aggregate of the three rounds his score finished all. square. He therefore become: the holder of the cup for the ensuing year. The congratulations of club members are well deserved as he played consistently good golf to win the cup. In his first year in club golf he is already playing on a 10 handicap. Owing to unfavourable weather there was no ladies’ golf during the weekend.
