RADIO HOAX
ALLEGED SINKING OF U.S.A. DESTROYER NAVY VERY SUSPICIOUS FROM OUTSET. , OWING TO IMPORTANT OMISSIONS. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright I (Received This Day. 12.45 p.m.) WASHINGTON. July 7. The capital was momentarily excited as a result of the Barry hoax, which was broadcast over nation-wide, major networks, causing thousands of citizens to telephone to newspaper offices for further details. The Navy immediately suspected a hoax, owing to the untechnical nature of the alleged 5.0.5., which failed to contain the longitude and latitude and possessed no signature with the Barry's call letters. It was also transmitted on a different frequency. The Federal Bureau of Investigation will make an immediate inquiry. Some radio men believe that an unknown foreign radio station was possibly responsible. A radio report that the United States destroyer -Barry had been torpedoed bj a German submarine was promptly denied by the United States Naval Department, which staled that the ship was- not in distress. The alleged radio report said the Barry was sinking slowly, after having been hit by a German submarine.
