TOKIO THREAT
IN EVENT OF BRITISH “PROVOCATION” STATEMENT BY NAVAL ATTACHE. HOSTILE COMMENT ON ACTION AT ORAN. (By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright) SHANGHAI, July 6. The Hsinking correspondent of the Trans-ocean agency says the Japanese naval attache, Vice-Admiral Kori, stated: “The slightest British provocation in the Pacific will be answered by the actions of the Japanese fleet.” He said the British attack at Oran was “an act of despair which might be repeated at any time in some other part of the world.” The Shanghai correspondent of the “New York Times” says according to a message from London that Britain's successful control of most of the French fleet is depressing the Japanese chauvinists, who feel that it will enable the United States to keep her fleet in the Pacific indefinitely. The expansionists have not concealed their hope that Germany would get control of the French navy, thereby weakening the British Fleet by necessitating a wider distribution of the ships and forcing Washington to move the majority of the American fleet to the Atlantic, simultaneously adopting a conciliatory policy to Tokio.
