TREACHERY AT SEA
MEN ON BRITISH SHIP SIGNAL U=BOAT VESSEL SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDED. TRAITORS OVERPOWERED. (By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, July 7. It is revealed that a British freighter with 700 evacuees from Cannes on June 18 carried six men who signalled to a U-boat and then attempted to seize the ship. The freighter lost its convoy because of engine trouble. The submarine attacked withou. warning on the fourth night -out from Cannes. The freighter manoeuvred and escaped a torpedo, after which the submarine fired two shells. The ship s gunner fired on the submarine, which dived. , ~ , Six men who signalled to the submarine with a torch attempted to seize the controls but were overpowered and nut in irons. ! The ship reached Gibraltar after six days, when the evacuees were transferred to a troopship which carried 1400 passengers and 450 troops in addition to the crew.
