The freighter manoeuvred and escaped a torpedo, after which the submarine fired two shells. The ship s gunner fired on the submarine, which dived. , ~ , Six men who signalled to the submarine with a torch attempted to seize the controls but were overpowered and nut in irons. ! The ship reached Gibraltar after six days, when the evacuees were transferred to a troopship which carried 1400 passengers and 450 troops in addition to the crew.
