FREEDOM FOR INDIA
GANDHI’S LATEST DEMAND SAYS DEFEAT OF BRITAIN WOULD BE GLORIOUS. ALLEGED CONDITIONS OF VICTORY. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 11.30 a.m.) BOMBAY, July 7. Mr Gandhi, interviewed regarding his latest talks with the Viceroy (Lord Linlithgow), said: “This is no time for mincing words or hiding thought. A free India alone can render effective help to Britain. Draining money or hiring money from a helpless India will not raise her moral status. Britain, whether defeated or victorious, will never be the same as before. Her defeat would be glorious, because no Power similarly situated could have avoided defeat. 1 do not say the same about her victory. It would be achieved by a progressive adoption of the totalitarians’ methods.” He added that Dominion status of the Westminster variety was a myth.
