: BEAULIVRE BEATEN
IN DOOMBEN NEWMARKET HANDICAP. A RACE RECORD. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) BRISBANE. July 7. Splendidly ridden by apprentice G. Moore. Australia's richest sprint, the Doomben Newmarket Handicap, was won by the locally-owned four-year gelding, Expressman, by whom the New Zealander Beaulivre, conceding two stone, was only beaten by a head in a stirring finish in heavy going. This is the second occasion on which trainer G. Price has had a horse beaten by a head in the Doomben Newmarket. The last occasion was in 1934, with Whittingham. Today’s time. 1.104, is described as a race and track record. Beaulivre appeared quite recovered from his colic and retained his prestige with belters. Trainer Price offered no excuse for the narrow defeat, but Jockey M. McCarten expressed the opinion that he thought Beaulivre had dead-heated with Expressman and he had to wail till the numbers went up to satisfy himself that there had been no deadheat. Results:—
Doomben Newmarket Handicap. Gf.: Expressman, 7.2 (Moore), 1; Beaulivre. 9.2 (McCarten), 2; Vcrgure, 8.11 (Knox), 3; Godfrey M„ 7.11 (Conquest). 4. Thirteen started. Beaulivre was in charge in the straight, but found the task of stalling oil the lightly weighted Expressman too severe, the latter winning by a head, with a length between second and third.
