ALFREDTON
MORE PRODUCTION KEEN SUPPORT OF CAMPAIGN. (“Times-Age” Special.) In order to save benzine it was decided to combine business with pleasure when a meeting of the district representatives was called for 7 o’clock on Thursday evening to elect a committee in connection with the extra production campaign. The picture proprietors, Mr and Mrs Foreman, readily agreed to postpone the showing of the pictures till after the business had been completed. Judging by the number of people present this experiment was a great success as rarely if ever has. a larger meeting been seen in Alfredton before. | Mr R. W. Kebbell briefly outlined the scheme, making a strong appeal for the full voluntary co-operation of the farmers in the production of more wool, heavier carcases, more butterfat to replace that taken for cheese, more eggs, pigs and beef. After pointing out that it was essential for the committee appointed to possess, firstly, tact and then knowledge, the following were appointed a committee: Messrs F. G. Lewis, H. N. Kebbell, J. L. Heckler, T. Dunn, A. A. Napier, R. W. Kebbell and Mesdames R. Low and F. G. Lewis as representing the women of the district. Mr R. W. Kebbell was elected chairman. The following motions were carried: (a) That the local councillors apply for the full co-operation of the County staff and plant in the extra production drive, (b) That the committee call a public meeting every two months to discuss the extra production drive. At this stage the committee retired to the supper-room to discuss their organisation and the pictures were started in the main hall. In discussing the ■ campaign afterwards, Mr Reg Kebbell said that he was certain they would get 100 per cent co-operation from the public. The way in which tractor owners and othei plant owners had come forward and put their plant at the committee s disposal was very encouraging indeed. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MONTHLY MEETING. A very large attendance of members marked the July meeting of the Women’s Institute presided over by Mis Stan Edmonds. The meeting was opened with the Ode to Friendship, the singing of “God Defend New Zealand” and the Prayer for Peace. After some discussion it was decided to combine with the local Patriotic Society in connection with sewing, knitting and raising funds. To this end it has been decided that a sewing bee take place in the hall beginning at 10 o’clock, and all interested are invited to take part. Clothes are to be made from new or used material. The social to mark the Institute birthday was abandoned and the birthday will now be celebrated at the August meeting. The ingredients for the cake have already been donated and the cake will be baked by Mrs A. Edmonds. Mrs W. McKay, Kilmori, was welcomed as a new member. 1 A considerable amount of clothing was brought in to be forwarded to the authorities for refugees. The competitions resulted as fol-lows-—Best bloom, Mrs E. Hutchings, Iceland popoy, 1; Mrs E. Seymour, Wallflower, 2; Mrs S. M. George, winter rose, 3.
