DEFENCE OF BRITAIN
EARLY ACTION AGAINST INVASION MINISTER'S DECLARATION. SUGGESTION BY LORD MOTTISTONE. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day. 11.25 a.m.) LONDON,. July 3. Brigadier-General Sir H. Page Croft Undersecretary for War, said: "Our intention is to defeat invasion at sea or even before the enemy embarks, but, if not there, then in the process of landing. Every landing place must be covered, not only by artillery, but by rifles and machine-guns. We intend to hurl him back into the sea. We believe no German will pass any defence work or blockhouse except over the dead bodies of their garrisons.” Major-General Lord Mottistone, in the House of Lords, in urging an increase in civilian offensive power and equipment, suggested that the Australian Division should be allocated to deal with airborne invaders, saying: “Among the divisions from overseas, where there are wider spaces, there are people with more novel conceptions of warfare.”
