HOUSEHOLD REFUSE

SOURCE OF PIG AND FOWL FOOD. COLLECTION FOR WAR EFFORT SUGGESTED. “The time has come for us to consider seriously the utilisation of edible household refuse, specially that of houses in the boroughs in the Wairarapa,” said the chairman of the Wairarapa Win-the-War Committee, Mr H. Morrison, this morning. “Here is a huge quantity of potential pig and fowl food, and it is simply being wasted. If every householder in the boroughs would place potato and apple parings, and other edible refuse such as bread ends, cooked and raw leftovers, in a separate receptacle, we might be able to arrange with borough authorities to partition the collecting lorries and carts so that the ashes were placed in one end of the vehicle and the edible refuse in the other. Mr Morrison was of the opinion that no householder would grudge the small effort required to see that this was carried out, and added that the volume of stock food conserved by this means would in all probability amaze the collectors. "Stock food is going to be our most crying need." concluded Mr Morrison. "and here is a wonderful opportunity to convert waste products into a real addition to our supplies.”
