TAHUNA
WOMEN’S DIVISION MONTHLY’ MEETING. ("Times-Age" Special.) The monthly meeting of the Eketahuna branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Anglican Schoolroom recently, the president, Mrs C. Welch, presiding over a good attendance of members. A motion of sympathy was passed to Mrs S. H. Smith in the loss of her sister, Miss Overton, Palmerston North, members standing in silence as a mark of respect. It was decided to hold the branch’s birthday party in August. Owing to the troublous times in which the Empire was passing it was thought necessary that the celebration should be on a smaller scale than was the case in previous years. Several members present donated the ingredients for the cake and arrangements were finalised for the baking of the same. A W.E.A. University Extension Lecture on Katherine Mansfield was read by Mrs T. Groves and this was much enjoyed. Mrs W. Curry consented to take charge of and deliver progress reports? Correspondence dealing with refugee children was discussed, members being in full accord with the scheme.
It was reported that the following ladies had donated clothes for the refugees: Mesdames McAlister, Clee, Richardson, A. H. Herbert, Payne and Hooper and Misses Wilson, Mitchell and Anderson.
Miss A. Anderson reported that she had received a letter of appreciation from Lady Galway in connection with the forwarding of clothes to the Refugee Guild. Lady Galway stated that no woman in the Dominion, who wished to render assistance for the relief of distress amongst the refugees, would have any difficulty in using the organisation of the guild for this purpose. A letter from headquarters urged members of the Division to increase egg production so that increased supplies could be sent overseas. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames G. Jaspers and J. Drysdale. Vital Statistics. The vital statistics for the quarter April 1-June 30, were: Births 7, deaths 5. marriages 8. Euchre Party. The Fire Brigade held another successful euchre party in the Anglican School Room last night. Despite the cold evening a large number of enthusiasts attended, and a very pleasant time was spent. Mrs R. Duncan was the winner in the ladies’ section and Mr Herb. Walton in the men’s division. Supper was provided. GOLF CLUB SOUTHEY CUP COMPETITION. The best cards handed in for the Southey Cup were: B. Anderson 1 down, Fordyce 3 down, O. Walton 4 down, Hornblow 4 down, J. Dickson 4 down, Henderson 4 down. Two rounds have been played and B. Anderson leads with a score of all square. The best card returned in the medal competition was that of O. Walton, 94-21-73. Ladies’ competitions: Stableford bogey, Miss J. Angus, 27 points. Medal round: Miss J. Angus 97-16-81; Mrs J. Berney, 113-30-83. INTER-CLUB MATCH. On Sunday afternoon a combined team of ladies and men journey to Hamua and played the annual interclub match with that club. Despite the bitterly cold conditions, which made play somewhat unpleasant, the games were keenly contested, the victory going to Eketahuna by 10 games to 7. Afternoon tea provided by the Hamua ladies was greatly appreciated. Competitions run during the afternoon resulted in a sum of over £8 being raised for the Red Cross Sick and Wounded Fund. It is the intention of the Hamua Golf Club to make another effort for the Red Cross Fund on Sunday, July 14.
