YOUNG FARMERS’ CLUB MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Carterton Young Farmers’ Club was held on Monday evening. Mr A. Fisher presided over a fair attendance of members. Arrangements for a Club Field Day in conjunction with the Carterton Secondary School pupils were made. It is to be held on the farm of Mr B. Roberts, Parkvale. Demonstrations are to be given on Jersey cattle and breakingin of a horse and a talk on the uses oi Algerian oats. Arrangements for the combined Birthday Party to be held in conjunction with the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union on July 11 were finalised- . , . , . The report on the financial side of the annual ball held recently was received from the secretary for the ball, Mr H. McKenzie. The profit, £la 3s, was considered very satisfactory. Members then had the pleasure of hearing an address on the work of the National Production Council by Mr B. Roberts, M.P., who is a member of the Council. Mr Roberts outlined the organisation at present at work throughout the Dominion, which consists of the National Production Council and the District Production Councils presided over by the local Department of Agriculture officer and consisting ol'"local practical farmers. He gave a£-<idea of how increased production should be brought about. Increased fertilising was the quickest and surest way, he said, and the cropping and resowing of inferior pastures should oe carried out immediately. To obviate difficulty in procuring manures, Mr Roberts advised ordering them several months before required, and storing. He mentioned that so far this year the fertiliser companies had delivered 65,000 tons in excess of last year. The British Government required eggs, butter, cheese, bacon, wool and lamb. To increase the production of cheese, cream supplies are to be to cheese factories, in most cases after the "flush." so as to keep the cheese factories working at full pressure as long as possible. Farmers were asked to keep more sows and laise more baconers; sheep farmers to keep their lambs a little longer and make them a little heavier, and generally increase their flocks. All farmers were requested to grow as much fodder as possible. It was for their own use that at least a quarter-acre of such crops be grown for each ten cows as well as adequate supplies of hay. The Rural Housing Scheme was explained, and the Government scheme of subsidy for training farm labour outlined. Mr Robeits pointed out that 1500 Public Works employees experienced in farm work were now available to farmers. Mr Roberts then answered several questions which were put to him by , members, and he was accorded a vote of thanks. . GOLF .
