SOME RESISTANCE

OFFERED TO THE RUSSIAN ADVANCE DISPUTES OVER TERRITORIAL LIMITS. SECURITY PRECAUTIONS IN RUMANIA. (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 1. The Bucharest correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain says a Rumanian communique announcing that the evacuation of Bessarabia and northern Bukovina will end on July 3 is interpreted to mean that Russia has granted an extension of time. The Russians are reported to have captured a Rumanian general in one of several outbreaks of fighting during the day. The Rumanians, it is stated, resisted the Russians when the invaders crossed the River Prut. In many places the Rumanians threw the Russians back and inflicted considerable losses, but the Russians brought up reinforcements and again crossed the river and captured the general. The fighting apparently ensued over the interpretation of the meaning of “northern Bukovina.” General Ulorescu is reported to have refused to accept the Rumanian War Ministry’s order to retreat and continued the battle along the River Prut. Nearly 8000 Jews crossed the River Prut into the territory occupied by Russia. Moscow announces that the occupation of Northern Bukovina is now completed, and in Bessarabia the occupation is continuing according to plan. An American journalist in Rumania states that ahead of the main Russian advance small tanks dropped from the > ah- are being used in the occupation. ' The dissension caused in Rumania by < the surrender of the territories to Russia has led to further measures being introduced by the Government for the security of the country. Cafes are to be closed at night; gatherings of or meetings of more than four people are forbidden; and persons are liable to internment where such action is considered necessary for the safety of the State.
