CARTERTON BEAT GLADSTONE. A SPECTACULAR GAME. The Wairarapa Rugby Union’s championship fixtures were continued in cold, bleak weather on Saturday. Ewington kicked a penalty just on the call of time to leave the score Masterton 12, Red Star 11. The match was a drab forward struggle enlightened with an occasional bright rush. Masterton’s forwards led by H. Ewington were solid workers throughout the • game, while the Red Star pack, which should be the best in the competition with the material it possesses failed to make the best of their opportunities. The Stars opened the scoring account when Mowatt kicked two penalties to make Stars 6 points up. Masterton then came to light when Ewington scored a try and kicked a penalty goal. The halftime score was 6 all.
In the second half in a spectacular back movement Henson cut through to pass to Peterson, who made a good run and handed on to Rippon, who cut directly infield to score a brilliant try under Masterton’s posts. Mowatt converted, making the score Stars 11, Masterton 6. Greytown beat Old Boys by 8 points to 7 in a patchy exhibition on Memorial No. 1 ground. The ground was very heavy and marred a game which promised to provide bright football. Greytown fielded a very light pack, most of whom were promoted juniors, and acquitted themselves very well. Old Boys threw the ball about in good style but failed to successfully finish many promising movements. There was no score in the first half, the honours of play being even. In the second spell Wilton touched down in a melee over the Greytown goal line to register Old Boy’s first points. Greytown later retaliated, Stringfellow crossing well out over the Old Boy’s goal line. Brunton converted a 40 yards kick in a brilliant effort, although the wind and the angle of the kick made it seem impossible of accomplishment. Play developed into a dour forward struggle, and from a tussle in front of Greytown’s posts M. Munn potted a field goal, placing Old Boys in the lead by 2 points. From a scrum 25 yards out Spooner whipped around to go over for Greytown’s winning try, the kick just missing. The final whistle sounded soon after with the score: Grey town 8. Old Boys 7. Mr H. Reid was referee. CARTERTON v. GLADSTONE. STUBBORNLY CONTESTED GAME. The ground was in splendid order and the match was stubbornly contested throughout. Both teams were at full strength and provided patrons with entertaining football. Carterton won the toss and elected to defend the southern goal, with a south-west wind in their favour. From the start it was apparent that the game would be strenuous. Play went into Gladstone territory, for Nunn to send the ball back to Carterton’s 25 yard line, where Gladstone wore awarded a free kick, but Mason failed to register a goal. Both sides made strenuous efforts to score, Mahapuka just missing a penalty for Carterton. Play went up and down lhe field. Mason missed with a penalty given to Gladstone.
