The Home Office, in view of the German occupation of parts of France nearest the Channel Islands, announced that they had been demilitarised. All armed forces and equipment had already been withdrawn. In a broadcast from Daventry it was announced that women and children and most of the male inhabitants had been evacuated, besides most of the dairy stock. Tomatoes had been picked and potatoes dug.
