HALT CALLED IN SYRIA
General Mittelhauser Announces End of Hostilities FRENCH FLAG WILL CONTINUE TO FLY OFFICERS DISMAYED AT TURN OF EVENTS According to a Daventry broadcast, General Mittelhauser, commander of the French forces in Syria, has announced the end of hostilities there. The French flag will continue to fly. In a statement on the position, General Mittelhauser and the French High Commissioner said that according to the terms of the French armistice there would be no change in the status of mandated territory. Consequently a cessation of hostilities had been ordered. A correspondent explains that the change m the commander’s attitude was due to the rank and file of the army losing heart. Most of the officers had their wives and families in Syria but the men had their families in France and had had no news of them for weeks. They waited in vain for any definite lead from Frenchmen in France to continue the resistance. French officers are dismayed at the turn of events.
