COLLEGE BOARD

MEETING LAST EVENING. REPORT OF THE PRINCIPAL. The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa College Board of Governors was held at the College last night. The chairman. Mr W. R. Nicol, presided, there also being present Mrs J. L. Hair. Messrs A. Owen Jones. L. T. Daniell. F. C. Daniell. J. D. O'Connor. F. M. Whyte. G. C. L. Dickel and T. Hanley. The matter of the College heating came under discussion, it being pointed out that the system was very ineffective and in some instances useless.

It was decided to approach the Department in the matter. The Principal. Mr G. G. Hancox stated in his monthly report that Charles W. F. Skill, of Martinborough, a first year pupil. passed away on June 18. The chairman, four boys and Mr Hancox. attended the funeral. Apresent there were 42 pupils boarding at School House. The half-yearly examinations had been held last week. On June 29 the house basketball teams would play Martinborough District High Schoo] at Masterton. On July 19 the first fifteen would play Napier Boys High School at Masterton, and the second fifteen would play Hutt Valley High School also at Masterton. The girls' first hockey eleven would play Danncvirke High School at Dannevirke on the same date. On the instructions of the Education Department a typewriter had been handed over to the Post Office for delivery to the Air and Army Department. In addition to making monetary contributions. the staff and pupils had assisted in many ways the various patriotic appeals. A social for day pupils was held on Saturday. June 22. The Australian debaters visited the College during their stay of three days at Masterton. Swedes, mangolds, and other root crops were being pitted preparatory to the cultivated area being ploughed in readiness for next season. All the grazing paddocks were in good order, and the sheep were doing well. The levelling of a football ground had been completed, metal spread on roadways, the pump-house had been roofed, and the new football grounds brought into play. The heating system at School House had been repaired and extended. Captain R. J. Fowler would go into camp with the officers of the Hawke's Bay Regiment on July 1 and would be away for the rest of the year. An effort was being made to obtain a relieving teacher.
