GREYTOWN
V/OMEN’S DIVISION MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union was held in the Parish Hall on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Beu presided over a very large attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem and the Division Creed. Mrs Wiggins made reference to the day being Mrs Beu's birthday. Mrs Beu thanked Mr Wiggins for his generosity in showing the Centennial celebration pictures last month. The Division would benefit from the same to the extent of £35 10s. A letter was read from Mr A. W. Horton regarding children refugees arriving in New Zealand. Mrs Knell read a poem and suggested the Women’s Division Rest Home at Awapuni be handed over as a children's home, for the time being. It was reported that the Division was losing two members in the persons of Mesdames W. J. Barnard and T. Orr. Mrs Beu presented Mrs Orr with a crystal salad bowl. Mrs Orr suitably replied, followed by musical honours; Mrs Barnard received a crystal water jug and crystal tumblers from the Division, the Girl Guides and the Plunket Society. Mrs Beu said Mrs Barnard would be greatly missed. She had always lent a helping hand and always did her best. Mrs Maddison spoke on behalf of the Plunket Society, and Mrs J. F. Thompson on behalf of the Guides. Alison Robb then presented Mesdames Orr and Barnard with a shoulder spray each. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs Cleghorn, Principal of St. Matthew's Collegiate School, Masterton. Her principal talk was on Syria, with a brief reference to Holland. She said that the capital city of Syria was called the “Garden City.” Damascus differed from other towns. One street had all shoe shops, or another all jeweller’s shops. This made shopping a very tiring business. The buses that travel to Beirut were very convenient as they had sleeping quarters, making travel more comfortable. While at Beirut Mrs Cleghorn visited a Girls’ Training College and it was interesting to hear English poetry recited. She said every one knew Holland, especially The Hague for the beautiful gardens there. At Amsterdam the trams all had postal boxes which made it very easy for people to post their letters. Mrs Cleghorn was thanked by Mrs Beu for her very interesting address and was presented with a posy. All the floral work had been done by Mrs Bayliss. A bowl of daphne and maidenhair fern arranged by Mrs Bayliss was auctioned and brought in 7s, which amount is to go to the Scouts' Appeal. Used stamps were received from Mesdames Denny, Dyson. Wood and Svenson. Mrs Barr brought along buttons, which are being used for soldiers’ hussifs. A shop day was arranged for Friday. July 5, to provide comforts for the soldiers. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. Haigh, Gregor, Barr and McKenzie. The singing of Auld Lang Syne and the National Anthem brought an enjoyable gathering to a close. Hockey Teams.
