CARTERTON
SOLDIER FAREWELLED MEMBER OF RAILWAY STAFF. ("Times-Age” Special.) At the Carterton Railway before his departure to Ngaruawahia training camp with the railway company, Mr J. Johnston, head clerk at the station, was farewelled by members of the staff, and the carriers and stock agents. In making a presentation to Mr Johnston, Mr Sullivan, stationmaster, referred to Mr Johnston’s outstanding personal qualities. He was a conscientious railway employee and a splendid citizen. Mr Johnston had been connected with the railways for several years and had become a very efficient and painstaking officer. They were all sorry to loose him, but the call to duty had come and he had answered it. He was leaving many staunch friends in Carterton, and also leaving his wife and young child to go overseas. They all wished him the best of luck and a safe return to New Zealand. On behalf of the railway stall', the carriers and stock agents he asked Mr Johnston to accept a safety razor and Leowe pipe, and said that he hoped that Mr Johnston would find time to write to his friends in the railway service. Several others spoke in a similar strain. Mr Johnston suitably returned thanks. Cheers and the singing of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow’’ followed. FOOTBALL SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP TABLE. The position of the teams in the senior competition is:— champ, played won points Gladstone 7 7 14 Carterton 7 6 12 Masterton 7 3 6 Old Boys 7 2 4 Greytown 7 2 4 Red Star 7 1 2 In the championship games on Saturday, Carterton will meet Gladstone at Carterton. The game will have an important bearing on the championship; should Carter ton win a play-off will be necessary, should Gladstone win they will be in a strong position foy the 1940 championship. The game cjjj Saturday will be controlled by E. Grantham, and a lot of interest is beilng shown by supporters of both teams t’nd the general public. Members of the Gladstone team who are in camp, have obtained weekend leave to enable them to take part in Saturday’s game. , Patriotic .Meeting. A meeting of the executive committee for patriotic purposes was held last night and was attended by the Mayor (Mr D. Taverner) Messrs F. Court, W. Martin, J. Steel, Geo Brown, A. T. Murray, E. Johnston, J. A. B. Lawrence, Rev. W. J, Couling and Mrs E. T. Beaven, Misses O. Wolters, and C. Berrill, and the Secretary. (Mr P. A. Cole).
Apologies for absence were received from Messrs L. H. Smart and B. Roberts, M.P.
It was resolved that the checking of parcels for overseas be left to Misses C. Berrill and O. Wolters, Mesdames L. J. Fairbrother, E. T. Beaven and Mr J. Steel, with power to expend the money in hand. Messrs E. T. Bliss. C. Downes and C. Jensen, representing the Parkvale district committee, were present by invitation. The Mayor explained the position in respect to the efforts to raise funds for making gifts to soldiers departing overseas and the various regulations in respect thereto. It was resolved that the Executive committee approve of' the Parkvale District Committee’s proposal to hold a function to entertain soldiers on Saturday, subject to the executive's regulations governing such functions. Each member of the committee is to be supplied with a copy of the regulations covering patriotic funds. It was resolved that representatives of Gladstone, Parkvale, Dalefield and West Taratahi be asked to attend a meeting in Carterton on Friday with a view to the co-ordination of patriotic efforts in the Carterton district and the disposal of patriotic funds under the regulations.
It was resolved that the purchasing committee be Mesdames L. J. Fairbrother, E. M. Gayfer and Mr D. Irwin.
s Farewell to Fireman. At the firebrigade station last evening a farewell was tendered to Fireman C. Fitzgerald, a member of the special New Zealand force. At a suitable interval Mr E. McKenzie, an ex-officer of the brigade, and a life member, asked the guest to accept a cigarette case from the brigade members. He wished Fireman Fitzgerald a safe return to New Zealand. Other members also spoke in a similar strain, including Mr H. J. McKenzie, who is also a life member. Mr Fitzgerald suitably replied. The singing of ‘’Auld Lang Syne" brought a very pleasant gathering to a close. Golf.
The following draw has been arranged for a bogey round to be played by the lady members of the Carterton Club on Saturday:— No. 7 tee —Mrs Orr and Mrs Colson; Candy and Mrs Harrington; Mrs Uwane and Miss Booth; Miss P. Rennall and Mrs Robinson. No. 11 tee —Miss Lamb and Miss Freer; Mrs Ross and Miss Armstrong; Mrs Pointon and Miss Hamer; Miss Peters and Miss I. Corlet, Miss Orr and Miss McFarlane; Mrs Goodin and Miss Lawrence. No. 13 tee—Miss V. Corlet and Miss Beaven; Miss Shankland and Miss Sorensen; Miss Lane and Mrs Hindley. Mrs Robinson and Mrs Ross will be afternoon tea hostesses. The Carterton ladies will play a match against Rototawai at Rototawai on Saturday, the team being as follows —Mrs Callender. Mrs Moroney, Miss Berrell. Miss M. Campbell. Mrs Murray. Miss Smart, Mrs Forbes, Mrs R. N. Campbell.
Borough Finances. At the monthly meeting of the Carterton Borough Council the treasurer reported a credit balance as follows: — Deposit at Post Office Savings Bank, £1419 Ils 9d; credit at Bank, £235 10s 6d. The gasworks account showed a bank credit balance of £143 Os 4d. Parcel Evening Postponed. The “parcel evening - ’ which was to have been tendered at Parkvale on Saturday evening to Miss E. M. Bliss, has been postponed and will be held next week. This has been found necessary owing to the fact that a number of soldiers are to be tendered a social on the same evening at Parkvale. Presentation to Miss Z. Challis. An enjoyable time was spent on Saturday night in St. Mary’s Hall when Miss Zelma (“Biddy") Challis and Mr Cyril Wyeth, were the guests of honour. Mrs Mellish presented Miss Challis with a dainty shoulder spray. Dancing occupied the greater part of the evening, the voluntary music being supplied by a number of those present. Mrs Paterson presented Miss Challis with a handsome electric iron, the gift of her friends. Mr Wyeth suitably replied on behalf of Miss Challis. A very enjoyable gathering was brought to a close with the singing of “Auld Lang Syne" and the National Anthem. Presentation to Mr Johnston. The presentation io Mr Gibb Johnston referred to in the "Times-Age’’ yesterday, was not connected with the R.S.A. ball, but was tendered to Mr Gibb Johnston in honour of his birthday, having been arranged by members of the R.S.A. committee in a private capacity. Entertainment of Soldiers. At the Parkvale Hall on Saturday evening next members of the New Zealand' Expeditionary Force will be entertained. At a meeting held on Tuesday evening at which there was a very large attendance arrangements were completed to entertain two well known residents of the district. Messrs C. Rayner and C. Brassel of the special N.Z. Force. A large attendance is anticipated. i j
