GOLF NOTES

MAHUNGA CLUB GAMES LADIES’ TROPHY COMPETITION. FIRST QUALIFYING ROUND. For some years now the ladies’ committee of the Mahunga Golf Club has donated an annual trophy for competition among the male members. This generous action is but a further example of the kindly interest which the lady members take in their opposite numbers and naturally enough is invariably a stimulus to better effort. The first qualifying round for this trophy was played on Saturday and resulted in many good cards being returned. C. A. Carrig, C. Sandbek and M. Syron headed the field each with a net 66. This is 5 strokes below the par of the course and the players mentioned are to be congratulated on showing such good form. They will no doubt be rewarded with a suitable reduction in their handicaps.

L. A. Curtis maintained his form of the previous week by scoring a net 68. He is now well on his game and showing improvement with each round. N. H. Rankin also scored a well deserved net 68. This player has received constant attention from the handicapping committee, but apparently his true worth has not yet been properly assessed.

G. R. Beecroft and J. Corbishley also played under their handicaps in returning net medal scores of 69. J. G. McFarlane returned his best score this year with a net 69. He is a lefthander and if he could overcome a temporary lapse with his woods should return better scores. F. C. Brockett also returned a handy 69 and with this good start should have no trouble in qualifying for the match play. It is Unfortunate that certain players automatically disqualified themselves from participation in the competition by practising to the greens prior to the commencement of play. The rule in this respect is quite arbitrary and is one with which all players in their own interests should acquaint themselves. Now that the club championships are approaching, it is well to ensure that no breach of the rules, whether innocent or otherwise, occurs.
