Hawker,'9B; Miss Freer, 98; A. Ordish. 98; L. Fitzgerald, 98; W. Press, 96. Fire Alarm. The Carterton fire siren sounded an alarm yesterday afternoon and the members of the brigade were promptly on the scene of the outbreak which was at’xthe Carterton branch of the Bank of New Zealand. The outbreak was caused through the heat from a “hot pot,” which was used for heating purposes at the bank, catching fire to the match-lining. The fire was subdued by the use of the bucket pump. Very little damage was done. Parcels for Soldiers. A large number of parcels for soldiers overseas were yesterday left at the Borough Council Chambers and in the course of a few days will be forwarded to Wellington for final dispatch. That the Women’s Institute and other women’s organisations in Carterton are working hard knitting comforts for soldiers overseas and in the camps of New Zealand was evidenced yesterday when the “Times-Age’' representative was shown large piles of beautifully knitted scarves and mittens, ready to be sent to the soldiers. The articles are well made, and the many ladies of Carterton and district are certainly busy working for the comfort of the soldiers. A parcel of scarves and mittens was forwarded to Trentham last week and Miss Wolters of the Women s Institute received very warm thanks in connection therewith. It is pleasing to note that the labours of the Carterton women are being appreciated. Personal Items. Mr J. Johnston, of Carterton, who enlisted in the Railway Company, left this morning for the Ngaruawahia Training Camp. Miss Eileen Matson, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs H. Matson, of Broadway, Carterton, who recently resigned from the head office of the New Zealand Railways, Wellington, was the recipient of a very handsome presentation from the staff, receiving a solid silver tea service as a memento of the high esteem in which she was held by her fellow-workers and to mark her approaching marriage with Mr G. Olson, of Wellington. Overdue Trampers Safe. The failure of two members of a tramping party to return to Wellington on Sunday night from a visit to Mount Holdsworth caused some concern, which increased yesterday when no further word of the whereabouts of the trampers was heard. They were Messrs Herbert Barley and Ray Lamberton, of Wellington, and had set out with others on a tramping expedition. At Mount Holdsworth the other members of the party stayed at the bot-

tom hut, the two pushing on to the second hut. The weather became bad during the weekend, and nothing more was heard of Messrs Barley and Lamberton until shortly before midday yesterday when they were reported safe by Mr Sayers, of Daleneld Road, Carterton, at whose residence they had arrived. Basketball Games. Yesterday afternoon at the Carterton District High School grounds the local school girls’ basketball teams met teams from the Greytown District High School. The games were fast and exciting throughout. The scores were as follow:—A grade: Carterton 10 goals. Greytown 9 goals. B grade; Carterton 12, Greytown 12. Hockey Match. The Carterton and Greytown boys’ hockey teams met on Carrington Park yesterday, the former winning by 3 goals to 2. Services Appreciated. , A number of the members of the R.S.A. who worked in conjunction with the secretary and ladies in carrying to a successful issue the recent ball, paid a surprise visit to Mr Johnston's residence. Kent Street, last night and presented him with a fountain pen in recognition of the work he had done. In making the presentation Mr A. T. Murray, chairman of the R.S.A. executive, referred to the work Mr Johnston had done for the R.S.A. and especially in connection with the ball. The Carterton branch of the R.S.A. was indeed fortunate in having the services of so capable an executive officer. Mr Johnston thanked Mr Murray for his kindly words and his R.S.A. comrades for having at all times assisted him in his duties. He deeply appreciated their gift and was glad to know that his work was of service to them. The singing of “He’s a Jolly Good Fellow" brought the gathering to a close. Return From R.S.A. Bail. The splendid effort of the ladies’ committee and the executive and other helpers in connection with the R.S.A. ball resulted in the sum of £7O being obtained. This will be added to when the final returns of sale of tickets come to hand. Golf Team. The following team will represent Carterton v Rototawai at Rototawai on Saturday:—George, Dodson. Steel Moroney. Goodin. Hughes, Taverner. Taylor. Whitburn, Harrington. Clarke, Riggs. Hart. Brown. Smart. Emergencies: Colson. S. Hill, B. Boaven, Lawrance.
